LCD connector went up in smoke, should I be concerned?

Hi,

So this little story all starts with me not paying attention to what I was doing. I’ll make it short and sweet. I changed the display on an iphone 6s, I forgot to remove the battery connector (first time I’ve done that) and the LCD connector started smoking. I immediately panicked and disconnected the battery after realising it was still connected.

The question I’m asking is, should I be worried with this phone now, as I’m fixing this for a friend. After replacing the screen and powering up the phone, it seems to be fine. Cameras still work, touch, screen etc. all work as they should.

Do I need to check anything to air on the side of caution or should I just put this down to a lesson learnt and consider myself lucky nothing bad happened?

Thanks,

Craig.

I would make your friend aware of what happened. You should ALWAYS disconnect the battery on the 6S and above when doing screen repairs because power does still flow some of the display circuits which is what caused that smoke to appear. Usually when this happens the backlight circuit gets blown and it is repairable most of the time but you want to let a microsoldering specialist handle it. Just beware that the next time the screen gets replaced that display connector could break even more or at any moment it could fail. Like I said, I strongly recommend you tell your friend what happened. Accidents happen, it’s what makes us human. As an experienced tech I still make mistakes but always inform my customers and tell them what I can do for them to make things right.
