Hi @captionmom ,

When you say “not working” can you elaborate? Is the port physically damaged or that it is just not working?

If it is just not working, try plugging a suitable device into the port and check if it gives an indication that there is power available from the port e.g. a USB mouse with a laser light or maybe a mobile phone to show that it is charging etc.

If it shows that there is no power, go into Device Manager and check that the USB root hub power management setting isn’t enabled and that it has turned off the power to the port preventing it supplying power to devices connected to it.

If Win 10 is the OS , right click on the Windows Start button on the left side of the Taskbar and click on the Device Manager link.

When in Device Manager go to Universal Serial Bus Controllers > right click on USB Root hub >Power Management and check if the “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” is unchecked. If it is checked , uncheck it > OK and then restart the laptop and then check if the USB port works OK.

You may have to check all the USB Root hub entries as I don’t know how many there are in your laptop and which one is relevant to the USB port in question.

Here’s an image to show what I mean. This is from my desktop PC but essentially it will be the same in your laptop i.e. same categories but different hardware.

If the port is physically damaged which one is it?

The port is physically damaged. I've got all Power Management settings to never shut off, and I believe I shorted it out when I accidentally inserted a smaller USB-C cable. Thanks so much for your time to clearify!

OK.

I don't know the laptop but here's the service manual taken from this webpage

On p.47 it shows the I/O board which has a USB port on it. If this is the port you may be able to simply change the board - example only.

As I said I don't know the laptop and therefore don't know if this is the correct port (it's on the left side).

Apologies if this isn't it. If it is on the other side then the motherboard will have to be removed to get it replaced.

Thank you so much for all of your time providing the great information!

Repairing an onboard USB port isn’t worth the effort involved unless you are skilled with soldering components on a laptop motherboard. Suggest a small USB hub to get more ports.
