I believe it works by detecting a short so if there’s corrosion between the pins in the port, it can trick it into thinking it has water in there. Rubbing alcohol and a toothbrush may be able to fix it. If not, seek out a charge port replacement. You can DIY the repair, just make sure you order the correct variant of port for your device as there are a few ones out there. Look at the model number either in settings or on the back for “SM” followed by three numbers then a letter or two. Example my Note 8 says SM-N950U. Also order a replacement back glass and back glass adhesive.
