Retina display rubber seal

Hi,

I am looking to replace the rubber seal that encloses the display and that also serves as a jamb when the lid is closed. asking in authorised retailers and Apple itself i have got the same answer: “you will have to buy the entire display replacement”. Well it turns out that is not in my budget range.

My question: Does iFixit has a alternative solution? As in a non apple rubber i could apply to my screen?

I’m guessing that replacing the rubber will involve some considerable work and skills in order not to damage the existing setup, so any heads up about the assembly will be welcomed.

Thanks for reading,

Rui

Keep in mind you likely face a 50/50 chance of repairing the display Vs breaking it!

So… If money is tight I wouldn’t even start this project! Also consider your need of the system, lets say you break the display it might take a couple of weeks to get a replacement display assembly!

So what would I do??

I would wait until you have the needed part in your hands so you have a plan-B solution before attempting this. I would also take the time to study this MacBook Pro Retina Display Teardown

Here’s one of the few parts houses that even have it! 13” MacBook Pro Lid Rubber Gasket (15) recycled.

Hi Dan,

Awesome advice, thanks for answering all my questions.

I will not try the replacement, the iFixit teardown showed me that I will have to deal with extremely sensitive contacts all of which I have no idea how to manage them or what their function is for.

Btw, genius of you for being able to find a 2nd hand shop with that rubber available.

Thanks for the help,

Rui

You would think that there would be an alternative idea. I think there could be some rubber pieces sold, similar to the feet, that could be used to protect the screen since the rubber gasket is failing. Mine is a 2012 Macbook Retina and it is not harshly used. The computer is fine for my needs but, why does the gasket not last. It is almost, to me, a warranty issue.

@Sharon Zoeller - Sadly, your logic is flawed!

The rubber bumper is a custom part so you need to find the correct part. They are still available but it does take some hunting!

Why do you think this is a warranty repair?

So your cars battery, muffler, or tires are covered 10 or 15 years after you bought your car? Sorry wear and tear is not covered under warranty! Rubber dries out which is likely the reason yours failed.
