Why is my Keurig Classic constantly turning off while brewing?

I put the Keurig brand K cup in, pull down the top, and press the brew button. It works for a split second then the machine turns off and I waste a K Cup. The K Cup just leaks into my cup and I have to remove it and try again because if I try and use the same K Cup it doesn’t taste right! It happens with numerous Keurig branded K Cups including Hot Chocolate, Cafe Caramel, and Cafe Vanilla. It’s been happening at least 3-4 times a week.

This is my third machine I’ve received from Keurig support and it’s still happening. I’ve done all the needle cleaning, reseting, descaling, and many other fixes. The unit is not even 3 months old.

I’m just at a loss of what to do because I don’t see many people having the same problem. I’m also sick and tired of wasting perfectly good K Cups! Anybody have ideas how to permanently fix this?

EDIT & SOLUTION: I've been able to resolve the issue using a work around. This is not a fix and I don't know why Keurig hasn't fixed it after years of this happening.

When using a milk based K Cup, press it into the bottom by hand so the K Cup is punctured. Pull it up and rotate 90º and close the lid. This gives the K Cup two holes and much less pressure. It has worked perfectly since I've been doing this.

I am on my 4th maker in 6 months. I've had 3 different kinds of keurig makers and they all do the same thing. Husband even changed out the outlet and still does the same thing. Fed up with keurig

I've been able to resolve the issue using a work around. This is not a fix and I don't know why Keurig has fixed it after years of this happening.

I had the same issue and tried all the recommended fixes outlined here, but to no avail. Here’s how I resolved the problem and it’s now working perfectly. BTW, my machine is the K-Elite, which has a removable water reservoir.

Remove the water reservoir then press your finger into the little plastic bladder that the removable water reservoir fits into. You’ll likely notice water will begin to ooze up out of the hole (which suggests there’s still excess water being held inside the machine).

Now turn the machine upside down while continuing to hold your finger on the plastic bladder. You should now see a good bit of water slurp out the top of the machine while holding it upside down. Tilt back and forth to remove all the excess water from the machine.

Next, turn the machine back over, re-install the water reservoir, plug it in and test with a new pod.

This seems like a weird fix but for whatever reason, my K-Elite is now working perfectly after taking the above steps. I’d be interested in knowing if this ‘fix’ works for you as well, so interested in your comments.

I attempted to remove the gasket beside the top needle and turned the machine sideways to do it. Noticed that there was some water that would come out of the top and I got more as I rocked it back and forth. I took the gasket off too. Suddenly the machine started working. I had some cleaning pods. I ran one of those through too for good measure and another one to rinse. Seems to be working now. Got to have some coffee FINALLY!

I did exactly as Jim Charles said. Pushed in the bladder and turned upside down. Small amount of water came out then stopped. Turned it upright, plugged in and it worked fine

Hasn't even been a month & just started cutting off on its own. I noticed while it heats up the water some of it leaks out probably from the pressure. I think the water is leaking inside of the Keurig & tripping some sensor or something causing it to cut off. I unplugged it took it to the sink & turned upside down & shook out all the water. Immediately plugged back in & worked fine. Seems to be a flaw with the Keurig & will probably have to do this on a regular basis. Not sure what model I have but so far this fixed the problem. Will just have to wait for it to happen again & see if draining the water out works a second time. Hope this helps.

Check your plug and receptacle. Our unit is over four years old. We have the one that has a latte and cappuccino setting. I was going to use Jim’s advice above, but when I tried to unplug the Keurig to turn it upside down, the plug was extremely hard to get out of the receptacle. Once I got it out, I noticed that the receptacle had gotten hot around the prongs of the plug, and the receptacle. I replaced the receptacle, and it’s worked properly ever since.

I have a keurig 3 weeks old. I put the pod in and machine turns off with coffee gathered on top when I open it up. It's very annoying.

Clinty’s solution is the answer. I have this problem too, and his solution works immediately. Solution: place k-cup in Keurig (you’ll hear that snap/pierce sound). Lift the Keurig lid and rotate your k-cup 90 degrees (a right angle) and close lid/pierce again. I think like Clinty said that the 2nd pierce releases extra pressure built up in the k-cup. Now run your brew. It should work beautifully. Thank you again Clinty - you get 10,000 stars. I was just about to throw away my Keurig and buy a new one when I saw your post and how it worked for so many. Way to go!

My k-select keurig is new, we’ve used for 4 days. Now it won’t brew. It tries, then turns off before starting to brew. We hear a clicking sound and then it stops working all together. Tried taking revisor on and off. Cleaning needle. Nothing works. I took out the pod and tried to just have water go through and same thing happens.

On my second brand new Keurig and I am having the same issue with machine turning itself off. Have changed electric outlets. Will try the manual piercing of the cup and see if that solves the problem.

Extra piercing worked for me as well. We shouldnt have to do that its hot and my teens use it and could get burnt there has to be a different way to actually fix it. My machine is new i had my old one for 8 years so i am not happy with this new one at all

Jessica Orr!!!! You are the greatest! My $200+ K cafe special edition had the same issue (press the brew button, get immediate powerdown on unit). I foolishly called the kuerig customer service number first to "troubleshoot" and after a 20 minute phone call with the first agent, who's only insight for me was that my model was no longer under warranty since it is 2 years old, the ONLY solution she could offer was 20% off another purchase, which she strategically referred to as "great news." After declining her offer and asking to be sent to the 4 question survey, I was instead transferred to another agent who upped her offer to 50% off after repeating the same misinformation of my product being defective. I once again declined. I Googled the issue to notice it wasn't at all isolated, and came across this solution, which worked like a charm. Keurigs 'customer service' is abysmal and sewmingly consists only of an outsourced team of scripted sales agents posing as a support team. Shame on you Keurig, shame!!!!

I was having the same problem. I actually came here for a solution , but something I read prompted me to take the piece out where the key cup goes into. The needle that is there was clogged from the backside. When you remove the piece you will see two little tabs that you can push in to pull the cupholder apart. Get a toothpick and just move it around in the hole on the back side and you will see gunk come out. I’ve only use mine maybe five times before this happened. After I cleaned it I put it back together And it’s working perfectly fine.

Remove the bottom pod holder with the bottom needle, pull off the tapered cover on the bottom of that You will see a round hole that the bottom needle is mounted on. The bottom needle is hollow with a slot on the side that will get clogged with coffee debris, especially if you leave the pod in the cup after brewing.. Use a toothpick or paperclip and run it up into the needle and unclog the slot, rinse and reassemble and it should work correctly.

It seems to be a problem with the cups. My problem was with Angelinos. Perhaps too much pressure inside the cup.

Here's the solution:

When you put the cup in the machine, push it down by hand and puncture the cup manually on the lower needle. Then bring the cover down and close it. Push the amount and no more problems..

Keurig needs to fix this defect. I am in my 2nd new machine in the last 30 days. I am so frustrated as the coffee I love is expensive and I am wasting money throwing them away when the machine acts stupid.

I tried all of there, no help. I saw that the K cup was full, however, it ran out when I removed it. To me, 1+1 = two. I took the k cup barrel out, cleaned the bottom needle (use a tiny wire, like a small paper clip) and cleaned the needle. I put it back on and I am right now enjoying my second cup of coffee today. Hope this helps.

I pulled out the part where the K cup sits and cleaned the needle with a paper clip by going under the needle and pushing it up through the other side. It’s working normal now

Remove the water reservoir and insert it back into place. The magnet in the reservoir can become dislodged during brewing from the vibrations in the machine.

Hi Clinty76. I’ve been in field service for many years, and when you see weird problems that others are not typically having, many times it’s something to do with the power source, or static electricity. I’d suggest you verify that your outlet has a good ground; plug in a ground tester that’s inexpensive from a hardware electrical store. Also, try plugging the machine into a small UPS like you’d plug your computer into. If that takes care of the problems, it’s related to the power source. If your air is extremely dry, you can be getting a build up of static electricity, and when you put the machine going, the zap you don’t feel when you touch the machine START Brewing button , could be hitting the machine and shutting it off! MANY weird things happen due to static electricity. Grounding yourself by touching a metal fridge or stove or something else grounded, before you touch the coffee maker could be a trial for a week also. Again, it appears that you are having problems that most other people don’t, and 3rd machine… Time to try troubleshooting your environment! Wishing you well.

Hello Clinty76. I see you still are asking R Bustos if they know what the answer is. I'm curious if you tried to verify your power and grounding. Again, if You are having trouble with 3 machines, and other people are not, it's Probably NOT the machines... Try to find if there is something unique about Your environment, and rule out what works and what doesn't. Take a machine to another friends house and try it there? Works??? Maybe so! Just trying to help figure this out! Wishing you well.

I've seen your posts and the answers given! I'm thankful for you all that you found a work around and the machine is working! I'm glad it's not a power issue, and it DOES appear to be a pressure issue from what you all are saying, so congrats on finding a work around, and sorry if my suggestions caused any consternation. I'm sure that power is NOT the issue here, after all the comments and the work around you worked out, but again, I have seen where power Was the issue in many cases in the past, so it was worth mentioning. Persistence is what will usually find the anwer to a problem, and you sir were persistent!

Mine used to do that all the time too. I was using distilled water, and it was almost like the particulate in the water was so low that the coffee maker thought it was running the pump dry. I switched to tap water, and have only had the problem one time since.

You have to make sure the kcup pierces through the needle at the bottom of the machine. Some cups i had to prepare a hole then line up with needle when I placed the kcup in the machine.

This is an odd answer but was the reason for mine: the needle in the tray that pierces the cup got bent and wouldn't pierce the cup. I wasn't aware as my only clue was that the machine would power off after it started to get ready to brew. I eventually looked inside, fixed the needle, and everything works great now.

I had the same issue, but I fixed it. It was quite an easy fix, actually. The problem was that the needle on the bottom side that is supposed to puncture the K-Cup from underneath had been bent downwards a bit and was not actually puncturing the K-Cup. I think this happened because my roommate was using one of those reusable plastic K-Cups, and the plastic material might have pushed the needle down some. I guess the Keurig must have some sort of built in safety feature that automatically shuts it off if it doesn't detect a hole punctured in the bottom of the K-Cup. just used a pair of pliers and just carefully bent the needle back up again so that it's pointing upwards. Now it works fine again. Hope this helps some of you out there.

I had this issue too. After unplugging it and removing/replacing the water reservoir a few times, I then tipped the machine over to try to empty the inner tank, which I was unable to do. But I thought I’d try running it one more time before giving up, and something about tipping it over worked. It’s working again. Maybe there was an air bubble somewhere?

I tried that a few months before and I had not luck BUT someone here (cant recall who) that the issue had to do with the K-cups receiving too much pressure when it initially gets punctured. Their solution was to manually insert the K-cup and to press it down until it's punctured twice. But the second puncture should be 180 degrees from the first one. This has solved my problem every time but I'm still going to try removing the gasket as noted by the comment below from Rita on July 18th. I think that her fix may be a longer term solution vs manually puncturing the K-cup twice every time. Good luck.

I opened the top and took the little gasket off that is around the top needle. I also tried to clean that needle with a toothpick. I kept the gasket off and didn't put in a K-cup, hit brew and it worked! I ran one more the same way and my machine ran perfectly. Finally I need a cup of coffee. The pump struggled at the end when it gives the last push and refills itself but i got a normal size cup of coffee and everything else sounds normal.

Mine did same thing. Rotating kcup to get a 2nd hole works AND if I set the Keurig to Strong (not all Keurigs have that setting).. Having a 2nd Keurig I swapped out the baskets and that fixed the problem in the malfunctioning machine, which then led me to discover some scale had let loose and was partially plugging the needle in the basket of the malfunctioning machine. Cleaned it out with a plastic toothpick and bingo - works like a charm!

My problem was ants! I descaled and they all came out thru the carafe descale brew. Freakin sugar ants. K-Duo works great again. Only took me 2 hours and 10,000 suggestions.

This should have been placed in the answer portion not a comment to the previous post… hey what can I say 1st time posting here. Read through the entire post. I have an older Keurig maybe 4 or 5 yo… no fancy stuff… on button and 3 sizes to select from and I believe a light that comes on if I need to descale. It does seem to be an over pressure issue and in my case caused by coffee grounds clogging the lower needle. My daughter never takes the pod out after use and I believe over time residue works into that needle. My fix… remove the removable cup holder with needle in it and do a thorough cleaning to include running a paper clip up from the bottom of the needle hole (a few chunks of stuff came out). If you look closely at the needle, the top opening is more to the side so it’s hard to gain access from the top thus paper clip from below… long enough to go all the way from the bottom to the top of the needle hole. Be careful not to do it too hard so you don’t mar or possibly bend the needle tip. It works perfectly. I then did a good descaling and overall cleaning followed by a cup of dark roast “Joe”! Hope this helps!

My solution was to install the cup and to press down until the machine punches a hole at the bottom. I then lifted the cup about 90 to 180 degrees and then closed the lid. My cup then had 2 holes and the machine never stopped again. That seemed to solve my problem until 6 months later, I realized that it will work even if i don't make the two holes.

I can't explain why the two hole solution worked for me for 6 months nor why I no longer need to make the two holes. Good luck.

I made two holes on the bottom of each cup by pressing down on the cup, then lifting it up and moving the cup about 90 degrees to 180 degrees and then closing the lid.

That fixed my issue. I can't explain why but it now pours coffee with no issues.

Hello everyone, I’ve had the same problem as all of you where the Keurig shuts off soon after brewing. The reason for this is because the needle that punctures the bottom of the K-cup is clogged with coffee grounds. This needle is like a syringe where it needs a clear passageway in order for the Keurig to operate correctly. So to fix this problem, use a toothpick and push out the coffee grounds. Your welcome 🙂

If a second hole helps, then most likely the hollow needle that makes the hole at the bottom of the pod is clogged. You can easily remove the plastic pod basket that includes that needle. Then separate the two parts of the basket, paying attention to how they are aligned. They are a little hard to separate, but not too difficult. Then hold up the larger piece of the basket and see if you can see light through the needle. If not, it is clogged, and you have diagnosed the problem. If you have 18 or 20 gauge wire, poke it up from the bottom through the needle to clear it. Don't poke from the top, it is hard to align the wire with the needle and you could stab your finger. If you don't have that kind of wire, peel the paper from a twist tie like usually comes on a load of bread, that wire should work, or maybe a stick pin or possibly a small paper clip. Bend it as straight as possible to give it some strength, and poke it through the needle from the bottom. If you can now see light through the needle hole, reassemble and enjoy your coffee.

The part you puncture the k-cup into on the bottom you will need to blow through it to clear the coffee grinds out of it. The puncture part on my keurig for the bottom part removes from the system and is two pieces that makes one part. I remove the bottom then blow through the part that leads up to the sharp metal that punctures the bottom of my k-kup. Hope this helps.

Hi there, I had this issue too. As soon as it started pushing water through it shut off. I think when it senses pressure it shuts off. The fix was to clean the puncture points for the k cup. They get full of coffee grounds and create pressure. So the spear type peices top and bottom, it was top for me but try both.

I tried Jim Charles's solution and had a decent bit of water come out, but it didn't fix it. I tried this several times without it helping. Eventually I got it to work after pushing a toothpick up through the needle and trying again. I didn't see any coffee grounds come out and it looked clean, but it worked.

I concur with other comments here where it acts like a pressure issue where it has to pressurize so heavily (because a clog, probably) that it taxes the motor and it shuts itself down. It's likely that needle, I'd think and I'm wondering if Jim Charles's solution has water hitting a few coffee grounds from the opposite direction, which fixes it? Good luck!
