How to replace Broan Eclipse switch assembly

I bought a replacement switch assembly for my Broan Eclipse Model 2830 Downdraft Blower System. I already had the simple disassembly done and tried to swap out the parts, but there’s a small circuit board riveted to the old assembly AND the actual switch is also riveted. So somehow I must un-rivet the circuit board from the old assembly (without damaging it) and attach it to the new one. I’m just a DIY gal with a rollaway of ordinary household tools. Any suggestions? Please?

Hi @chemess ,

Usually the way to remove rivets is to drill them out.

Use a drill bit with the same diameter as the rivet shank. Drill from the rivet head side. This will release it from the rivet head and usually the rivet head will wrap around the drill bit and the shank will fall out. Just be careful where the metal swarf created by drilling goes, that is doesn’t get stuck anywhere on the board and possibly create electrical problems when the power is connected

You can then either rivet the board back into place with a same size rivet or whatever fills the fixing hole e.g. a suitably sized nut with washer(star washer?) and bolt arrangement perhaps.

Post some images of the board, rivet etc as maybe there might be other suggestions. Here’s how to do this 在已经存在的问题里加入图片

Thank you so much! I've added photos, as you suggested, and will do so again if I need help with another DIY project. Thanks again!

Hi @chemess ,

The switch is soldered on, not riveted on.

You need to carefully unsolder the switch terminals from the board, using a soldering iron and a solder sucker or wick to remove the entire switch and then resolder it back onto the new board.

All the links are examples only. If you don't have soldering tools or expertise maybe you know someone who does and they can do it for you. ;-)

@jayeff Thanks again. Fortunately for me no soldering was needed. Except for dropping two flipping machine screws down into the abyss, the job is mostly complete! Your suggestion to drill out the rivet was aggravating but successful - thanks again!

PS - I do have soldering tools and [somewhat rusty] skills.

Hi @chemess

Apologies.

My mistake, I re-read your post and realized that I was looking at the switch and not the board in regard how to remove it.

It is unusual to rivet the heatsink of a component to the metal of a device but I guess that a long term solid connection (read cheap) was desired. Hopefully the component was not damaged by the rivet removal process

Also if the screws did fall into the device find them as for sure they will resurface at some time and create problems if you don't find them first ;-)

@jayeff Yup, just buttoned it up. The thing raises and lowers, but the fan itself won't come on! (It worked before.) My fear is that somehow I shorted out the circuit board or all the fussing around broke the solid connecting wire to it. I'm too exasperated to work on it anymore tonight, but I'll investigate it in the next few days. Thanks, again, for your help!

Also, I did not carefully inspect the circuit board for aluminum bits from the drilling. Aside from the irksome disassembly, this would be an easy fix! Oops.... jinx?!
