Jumpy / Lagging Magic Track Pad Issues - RAM Related?

So I just bought a brand new Mac Mini, straight from Apple with only 8GB of RAM and installed a 64GB Samsung kit I found on Amazon. The machine seems to run fine, RAM shows in the system and all, but one issue that recurs and is driving me crazy is that my Magic TrackPad isn’t always fluidly smooth…sometimes it will start to jump when I’m moving the cursor, other times it seems like clicking is impeded. I’ll move my finger to another spot on the trackpad or I’ll power cycle and it will work again fine for 15 minutes, but issues come right back.

I reinstalled the Apple OEM RAM and have been running now for 20-30 minutes without issue…does bad RAM do this? I’ve been out of the Apple repair game now for 12 years, so I’m not as sharp as I once was.

Follow-up here…not related to RAM. I went back to the OEM RAM and still have the same issue. I’ve reset NVRAM and still nothing. When I boot into Safe Boot it doesn’t seem to happen. Hmmm.

So I reinstalled the OS and still not fixed. I’ve created a new user account and started using that…I might be on to something here. So far I’ve used the new user for a few hours without a problem. We’ll how it all holds up today.

Very odd! Replacing the RAM shouldn't have affected your user account data. Sounds like you have a virus or malware infection now.

Well the only thing about a Virus or Malware is that it did this pretty much from the start and all the software I use is very legit. In the new user, just in the last 25 minutes I've started experiences issues. It's as if the trackpad is disconnecting and reconnecting very quickly. I never see the disconnect/connected icon that comes up with Bluetooth, however, it has that feel. This is so frustrating...last and final step is going to be to wipe the machine and start from scratch and see what happens. If is still happens we know we have a hardware failure somewhere.

I have just resolved this by deleting the Android File Transfer App. It was causing issues with magic trackpad 2 on MacOS Big Sur.

If you have Android File Transfer app, remove it and see if the issue resolves.

turning off the trackpad and turning it back on with the physical switch located next to the charge port fixed the issue for me. no more lagging.

OK, I think I have this solved as an actual hardware issue with the computer, perhaps in the MLB or BT module. I disconnected the trackpad via BT and plugged it in via USB—>Lightening cable. It worked flawlessly the rest of the day. So to me seems to point at an actual hardware issue since I have isolated users and OS in this entire escapade. This sucks because this was a BTO Mac Mini and I’ll have to wait another 7-10 days to get a new one.

Its possible the RAM you got is fake!

A new scam is happening where lower quality (lower spec’d) RAM is substituted for the real.

We have seen an large up tick from Apple chargers Safety tests of 400 fake Apple chargers bought online reveal that 99% are dangerous, 2.5” SSD’s like Kingston Fake Kingston SSD and of course RAM! Warning lots of fake ddr4 ram listings on ebay as well as Amazon.

Best to return it and buy directly from the company that makes the RAM.

Well fake RAM is not outside the realm of possibilities. Now, the seller I bought from on Amazon has crazy high rating and I do see “Samsung” printed right on the board, but I am convinced that it is bad. I’ve had zero issues since going back to OEM RAM with the track pad. So I’ve already ordered some new stuff and we’ll test it out when it gets here. Thanks for responding!

The rates can be fixed! All they do is ship the part to them selves (home or family friend) then give them selves a good rating. Look at how many have responded as the larger number is a better clue. Its also possible they got stuck with some bad stock too!
