Why won't my pictures download to laptop

When I connect the camera to my laptop it will freeze when it gets so far. Initially it stopped at 1,322 pics, then 1,325, then 1,326, and now at 1,329. It freezes at this point. Only one time did it display the pics ready to download so I could select them to transfer to my laptop but the screen was frozen and I couldn’t do anything. After awhile, it will close out and I need to try again. Nikon Coolpix P510 Help please! TIA
