Internal mic and speakers not working on Mac Air

Hi! When I tried to use my laptop this morning, the internal speakers and mic weren’t working and no longer show up on the System Preferences.

I’ve looked for results and tried:

restarting computer

restarting PRAM

restarting SMC

plugging headphones in and out (they don’t appear as an option either)

rebooting the audio in the Activity Monitor

going to ‘diction’ and trying to calibrate the mic that way

Bluetooth is still working and the sound works through a bluetooth speaker. I didn’t have an accident with water or banging the computer or anything.

Any suggestions?!

Thanks so much for your help—I actually found some advice elsewhere to try sticking a toothpick in the headphone jack to see if something was stuck there. I turned the computer off and did that, and a bit of fluff came out, and when I restarted the computer the sound and mic all worked. Hopefully these answers can help someone else in future!

Yes! Many thank sJane. That worked for me. I had no internal speakers or mic and, crucially, no startup chime so it was obviously a hardware issue. Turns out to be something as simple as a clog in the headphone socket flagging to the mac that a headphone was connected and cutting off all internal sound i/o. Wooden toothpick probe worked a treat. :)

Hi Jane,

2 things i would also have checked;

  1. Click the  logo, hold option/alt key, click System Information. look under audio on the left and see if any devices show up.
  2. Add another user account to see if it’s a preferences issue.

Failing that, check some good tips here, https://osxdaily.com/2015/03/01/no-audio...
