What's the layer between the screen and housing called?

Look at the material between the screen and the gold body. Is this regular plastic, or some sort of polymer/composite? This shock-absorbent material has been present since iPhone 6, and supposedly was on the back of iPhone X but the next generations didn’t get it.

“plastic, or some sort of polymer “ ?

Aren’t they the same thing?

It’s plastic around the edges, but the part beneath the screen is actually metal. The plastic is cast over the metal frame, so it’s some sort of composite i guess?
