Internal microphone doesn't seem to be working

Trying to use Zoom for virtual meeting or webinar. Have set sound in system up, chosen internal mics for input and output. Output is fine, and can readily adjust volume. But can’t get internal mic to work. Any suggestions on what to do about this very frustrating situation? Thanks for your help and suggestions!
