Not charging when on and not turning on when charging

Hi I have this Macbook and it does not charge when it is on. When it is off it charges, but any attempt to turn it on does not work. I have tried everything I could find online (shift ctr option power, fn ctr command power, etc). Once charged I unplug and leave it over night and somehow it turns on the next day.

Two things to note: for the past two weeks the command-space search has not worked (maybe a software issue).

And also I moved from Canada (110V) to Brazil (usually 200V+ but my landlord says 110 in the house).

Your Apple charger is able to work with either 120 or 220 volt systems so that shouldn’t be an issue. But many cheap fakes don’t support dual voltage! It could have even damaged your system! I have added the image to the original question.

I should also note that as I just turned my computer on, I noticed a distinct smell of chemicals coming from the computer. Not sure if this is paranoia or there is something wrong with the fan or battery hardware etc.

And the charger I am using is from Apple. I had the original charger replaced with a new one using Apple Care about 3 years ago; so it is not too old either.

Well, the CoconutBattery output is telling us your battery is just shy of the end of its life! The battery is only rated for 1000 cycles and yours is at 988. So you'll need to think about getting the battery replaced soon. Determine battery cycle count for Mac notebooks. The battery does seem to still be working within reason. So that aims us to the logic board that needs service. living in Brazil now does make getting your system fixed a bit harder. Its possible someone with good MacBook repair skills could fix your logic board or you might find getting a replacement logic board easier. The last items that could be a factor is the humidity as it can be quite humid in some parts of Brazil, and if you are near the ocean the sea water mist or spray can be corrosive as well.

I wasn't aware that the battery is rated for 1000 cycles. There is no official apple store where I am but there are some unofficial repair shops.

Yes I think it must be the humidity then, as I have not had any direct water damage (sea water or otherwise).
