Usually Strong WIFI now Weak or Not Working

The WIFI connection at home has always been excellent, but recently slowed substantially and sometimes requires a restart to connect at all. After checking all possible problems, I decided to replace the modem card. But, that made no difference.

I’m registering only about 10% of the download speed I achieve using ethernet (225 mbs). Another family member’s MacBook, in identical proximity, always posts over 200 mbs using wifi.

All software checks,  disk repair and Apple Diagnostics show no problems. Any ideas? Thanks for your help!

Update (02/24/2020)

Hate to say it, but I do not know how to delete the AP’s listing and re-enter it. Please walk me through that.

My Mac is an early 2011 MBP with added RAM and SSD. Second devise is a 2019 12” MB.

I think you need a better tool! Get this tool WiFi Explorer lite It will allow you to see the signal strength. Install it on both your Mac systems so you can do a direct comparison.

I think you’ll find your slower system is connecting to the 2.4 GHz band and your faster system is connecting to the 5.0 GHz band.

If thats the case you’ll want to alter your WiFi AP’s names as by default both antennas will use the AP’s name so which band is Acme? But if we label each band with a unique name Acme2-4 and Acme5-0 then you can discriminate between the bands!

You’ll also want to delete the AP listing from your WiFi list and re-establish the connection.

Thank you, Dan, that tool sheds significantly more light on what’s happening with the wifi connections. However, it did not point to a solution. The second Mac is showing signal strength in the ~ 80% range on both channels 2.4 and 5GHz. and having no connection issues The problem Mac is in the ~ 20% range also on both channels. In addition, at times wifi will simply not be able to find networks. That’s usually resolved with a restart. Any other approaches that I might try? Thanks, again.

Did you delete the AP's listing and re-enter it? Start with that.

There is only three parts involved here the Airport cable from the logic board to the Airport board, the Airport board, then the antenna cables and the antenna assembly.

You could try swapping out the Airport cable and Airport between your other MacBook Pro if its another 2011 or 2012 model.
