Model A1419 / EMC 2806 / Late 2014 or Mid 2015. 3.3 or 3.5 GHz Core i5 or 4.0 GHz Core i7 (ID iMac15,1); EMC 2834 late 2015 / 3.3 or 3.5 GHz Core i5 or 4.0 GHz Core i7 (iMac17,1) All with Retina 5K displays

What is my fastest SSD upgrade option?

I own a late 2014 iMac 27” retina display with the Apple’s 256 GB SSD. What is my best storage upgrade option, assuming by “best” I mean fastest (I’d settle for a 512/ 1 TB SSD option).

-edit-

I’ve found this combo:

NGFF M.2 nVME SSD Adapter Card + WD Black SN750 NVMe - apparently the adapter fits into the iMac (although it might be tough to install the adapter), can anyone confirm that this would work on my computer?

Thanks!

Are you talking about the SATA HDD or the Blade SSD?

Blade SSD preferably, since I'm after speed.

If you are going after the best solution then you want a PCIe/NVMe x4 blade SSD. I personally recommend sticking with the original custom Apple SSD's as they hold up much better than the adapted M.2 solutions. Given how far you need to dig to even get to the drive in the iMac's this is the smarter direction.

If Speed is your issue then surprisingly an external drive will be faster! The cheapest solution would be a OWC ThunderBay 4 That can get you 980 MB/s of sustained throughput!

Dan, confused ... are you saying 4 SSDs in a RAID format or internal Apple SSD that (I think) only supports 2 lane PCIe

@Ted Filmore RIAD is a means to mashup multiple drives to increase performance and/or data safety. review this write up for the deep dive RAID levels 0, 1, 4, 5, 6, 10 explained

The PCIe lanes is strictly an internal architecture of the iMac (or other computer).

These are the lanes coming directly from the CPU and/or the PCH logic which can mux the lower devices to the PCH's PCI lanes to the CPU.

Best to think this like a major rail station has multiple tracks.., so let's say 16 trains can be waiting going to different directions. Some may pass through a down stream major station with has 10 tracks (6 whens to a different direction) and then these in turn branched off. There can be many different configurations possible! It's up to the system designer what they want to do.

The best solution is going external if you want large storage, performance and data safety depending on what you configure. As an example OWC ThunderBay 4 is one possible option.
