Display Backlight - Not Logic Board

A year ago I purchased a new display assembly for this laptop due to intermittent failure of the original one. All was fine until yesterday when the backlight died.

I don’t believe the problem is with the logic board, as when I plug in my old screen, which works for a short period of time, the backlight comes on an behaves normally.

My question is if there is anything on the display assembly that is worth trying to fix? I know the cable is available so I may try that, but are there any other things to try?

Rarely does the LED’s within the backlight assembly fail. More often the issue is liquid damage to the displays logic board at the bottom is about the only thing I’ve seen in this series.

Did you spray your screen with a cleaner? Thats often the cause. What happens is the liquid drips down to the bottom edge and onto the circuitry below it corroding the connector.

The fact you swapped over the display leads me to believe this is the case here. Hopefully you haven’t caused any deeper damage. It’s time to get another display and if you need to clean it, spray the cloth instead.

I haven't sprayed the screen, but I did deoxit both ends of the magsafe assembly, the external connector and the internal PCB connector. The internal connector is very near the underside of the LCD panel connector, so I was worried about the logic board.

But when my other screen's backlight worked I ruled that out. I suppose it could have damaged the end of the LCD cable, but inspection didn't reveal anything.

Can the LCD logic board be swapped between panels? I could probably answer this myself, but the machine is at home and I'm working ATM. I suppose I could also just try swapping cables as well.

Deoxit or other spray electrical cleaners are not something I recommended on computers as they often have oils which tend to collect dust and in some cases have acids or bases or solvents which alter the chemical makeup of some metals and plastics.

I personally use a re-loadable sprayer which I can control what I use when I need a spray. Most of the time I use cotton swabs to wipe the surface with reagent grade isopropyl alcohol or if possible use an ultrasonic cleaner.

I swapped the LVDS cable from my old screen and the backlight came right on!
