Inconsistent display issues on early 2013 MBP

Hi all,

I have an early 2013 retina Macbook Pro that's stumped three rounds of apple geniuses.

Symptoms:

No display 75% of the time. I can hear the start chime, but no screen or back light. Occasionally I'll get the login page, but the screen will go black as it loads after login.

I can consistently get to the diagnostics by holding command D at startup. Standard and extended diagnostics run and come back clean.

Every other combination of pressing keys at startup does nothing. The screen never comes on. I did manage to get the apple logo and halfway through the loading bar once while pressing command R, then the screen went black. Three subsequent tries gave me nothing.

The third genius suggested it might be the logic board, but said he was guessing because nothing was showing on the diagnostics. He also said that the fact that the diagnostics come up consistently would indicate a software issue, but he didn't know how to wipe and reinstall without a display.

Any ideas?

What does the external monitor show? That would help isolate out which way you need to go.

Upon testing... I got it to turn on and mirror to an external monitor. Then I restarted, screen didn't come on, no mirroring. Third try, got to the login, no mirror. Logged in, screen cut out halfway through loading the user. Two more tries, startup chime but no screen.

I'm not sure whether mirroring should show on the user login screen or not. If I can get it to start up properly again I'll remove user login and test with an external monitor again.

You locked the issue down! Yes, your logic board has a problem! The retina series have a more complex display logic than the older unibody systems or even the newer USB-C systems.

Unlike the older unibody 2012 which only had one mini DisplayPort to switch the display output either extending your desktop or mirroring. The retina series have two Thunderbolt ports as well as a HDMI port and to add to this each TB port can support two independent images extending your desktop times two and the HDMI can also mirror!

All this switching and muxing off of the graphics signal feed is a lot of work and we still have two graphics systems! The intergraded Intel CPU graphics engine and the dedicated GPU you have even more complexity!

As you are able to get the display to work sporadically it’s a good sign as you logic board is repairable! Someone with deeper skills and the needed tools/parts can fix your logic board! Apple won’t do that, people like Louis Rossmann in NY could.

The other option is just replacing your logic board MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Early 2013 Logic Board Replacement. While expensive it is the easier way and depending where you live it might be your only option. Its not overly hard as long as you have the needed tools and a good work area.
