Can I install Radeon HD 4850 to my mid 2010 27" iMac?

Hey guys!

I’m trying to update Mac OS to Catalina on my mid 2010 iMac, but as I found out I can’t do it with Radeon HD 5670 I have.

So I wonder if I can replace a video card, and install HD4850 (which should work fine with latest Mac OS) instead of current HD5670?

Thank you!

Replacing your Radeon HD 5670 for a Radeon HD 4850 won’t help you running Catalina as its also not Metal compatible. You need an AMD Radeon HD 7xxx or better GPU.

How about just running DosDude’s patcher macOS Catalina Patcher

Yeah, I want I use his patcher, but system compatibility says “iMac11,x (systems with AMD Radeon HD 5xxx and 6xxx series GPUs will be almost unusable when running Catalina.“. I’ve checked different forums and it seams like it’s actually no way to use a patchers for my 5670 GPU. Same time patcher should work for 4xxx

Ok I double-checked on macrumors forum and one guy confirmed that he installed Catalina with patcher on his 9.1 iMac with HD4850.

So my question is still open. Can I actually install that GPU to my iMac 10.3? Seams like it should work, but I want to make sure and get a confirm from somebody who has more experience in this field than me

Here's a rundown on the performance of the two boards:

Radeon-HD-5670

Radeon-HD-4850

Personally, I don't see enough of a difference here I personally haven't tried using either of these GPU's with with a patched Catalina so I can't tell you more.

Apple P/N: 661-5314 MXM III, ATI Radeon HD, 4850 512 MB. You'll have issues with the heat sink at the 27" unit is bigger. Remember you need a MXM 3.0 board not a standard PCI/PCIe board.
