MacBook Pro is not starting at all

Hey there,

I have a macbook pro 13” Touchbar 2017 model.

I didn't used it for about two months and when i was back it started showing different problems like:-

  1. Even when battery was charged more than 50% it wasn't starting until one hour of charging.
  2. Any key combination wasn't working until one hour of charging made the machine somewhat hot.
  3. It started once or twice by doing this and the third time when it started the touchbar just died.
  4. Well, the touchbar was responsive to touch but not showing anything.
  5. Now the machine is totally dead. it's not starting up and not showing any sign of life. No key combination is working.
  6. Now even charging it is not making any difference. it's just dead.

To start with are you sure you have a good charger? Are you using the correct cable as well as try other ports on the other side.

Unlike the older models there is no visual clue if your system is charging other than on the screen its self with the dead/low battery icon which is useless to validate if the charger/cable is working.

I would strongly recommend getting a USB-C power meter to give you a better view on things. Here’s one Eversame 2 in 1 Type C USB Tester Color Screen LCD Digital Multimeter, USB C Voltage Current Voltmeter Amp Volt Ammeter Detector USB Cable Charger Indicator DC3.6-30V/0-5.1A

Try a second charger and cable. Let us know what you discover.

Well, I have to ask the obvious.

  1. Did you have any kind of water spill on the machine? was it subjected to an abrupt change of temperature? (Hot to cold or cold to hot)? Was it subjected to shock or heavy objects being placed on it?
  2. It sounds like your main logic board is just dead. This might have been caused by any of the above, but my guess is that somewhere along the line the charge port shorted causing a short to the battery. (which is why when you charge it gets hot).
  3. After the short, the battery would have just died from not being used over time, even like over a night or something.
  4. There could also be an issue with the power button circuit (were any other keys damaged in the process)? Sometimes two keys share the same circuit, meaning that if one doesn’t work, the other won’t either. I know apple is notorious for having random keys share the same circuit as the power button, killing the machine prematurely.
  5. Have you tried going into the machine and jumpstarting it? (Shorting the power pins)
