iPad air fake charging after screen replacement.

A friend asked me to look at this iPad after he tried a digitizer replacement and it failed to charge afterwards. Already tried new battery.

My first thought was the battery connector pins but they look perfect.

Second thought was a knocked off component near the connectors, but everything is intact.

Can’t think of much else that can go wrong during a screen job…

It is recognized by itunes but will randomly disconnects and reconnect every once in a while.

Power consumption is weird. When plugged into PC it steadily pulls 0.48A. When plugged into phone charger it jumps around from 0.03A to 0.72A. Everything disconnected including screen. Left it on both chargers for an hour and battery went from 9% to 7%.

Multimeter wont turn on so I can’t measure actual battery voltage right now.

Tristar? Charge port? Anything easier to check before trying those?

The iPad Air develops issues with the charge port. Take a look at the screws that secure the charge port in place in the housing. If they are loose, you most likely have a charge port issue because that allows the charge port to move a little bit every time it is plugged and unplugged, eventually causing cracks on the flex itself. Sometimes these cracks are easily visible, other times, you have to do continuity probing across the flex.

This requires a micro-soldering repair.

Screws are indeed a little loose.

Are the cracks that you speak of in the solder connection between the port and the flex? It's under glue but I will dig it out if it can be re-soldered.

If the cracks are visible, it's usually right next to the glue that covers the feet of the connector. It's not about bad solder joints but cracks in the copper traces within the flex itself. When this is the case, the flex has to be changed.

Ok thanks. Everything looks good so I guess I will try a new charge port flex.

Have you checked continuity between the actual Lightning Port and the logic board? That could save (or confirm) the required soldering work.

Good idea, but where are you taking your measurement from on the lightning port? The feet of the lightning port under the glue? Or I guess I could slice a lightning cable in half and plug it in and test from the bare wires. Or are you probing inside the connector?

Also I'm not sure about the pinout from the lightning connector to logic board. Does ZXW show it? I don't have a subscription anymore.
