Mac will not stay on, macsafe light turns off after awhile

Hi everyone, I have a late 2013 macbook pro which will not power on. The macsafe light would not turn on:

Some stats

  • Macbook Pro working fine and then just”turned off” one day while wife using it
  • Opened up macbook and disconnected the power to the battery. Waited a few hours. Connected the magsafe then it would turn on and boot normally.
  • Assuming it was the battery I reconnected the battery and turned it on the next day
  • Worked for a small amount of time then would turn off
  • Removed battery connection again.. waited and then reconnected power (green light would turn on)
  • Turn on and would get the grey apple with a progress bar
  • Computer turns off after a few minutes. Magsafe no longer powers

Tried SMC Reset

Any ideas?

Thanks

Lets get a better view of things here install this gem of an app CoconutBattery

Take a snapshot of the main window with the charger connected and a second with it disconnected. Post both here for us to see 在已经存在的问题里加入图片

Use the same method again disconnecting the battery and pressing the power button, then reckoned the MagSafe charger the charger should be Amber. Then carefully plug in the battery again the system should still continue to work. And now take the first snapshot. Let the system run a good hour then disconnect the MagSafe charger and then quickly take a second snapshot it should state its drawing power from the battery.

Thank you for your help Dan

Unfortunately I cannot power my laptop until I get to the desktop screen

A few days ago I powered it and it went to the desktop and worked for awhile

A few days later after I would leave the charger out and let (possibly an onboard battery) discharge and power it up I would get the grey apple plus a progress bar that would hang.

Now after coming home from work, I have plugged in the charger into the port, it would go from yellow -> green and then off again.

The computer is now unresponsive....

Could this be the logic board, or the magsafe board?

Can get the system to work with just the MagSafe charger? Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters and you know the charger is good and the MagSafe connection are clean and in good shape? Then I would suspect your logic board has an issue. I should point out the age of your system also puts your battery in question.

Hi Dan,

I had a spare charger so I swapped them with another macbook which worked fine with both chargers, so ruled it out. I cleaned the connector with a toothbrush and it is very clean.

since my last comment I disconnected the battery again and allowed the onboard battery to discharge. I then connected the magsafe charger into the port (and the indicator would go green). I powered up the mac and it actually went to the desktop. After a minute or so the mac just died and there was no more indicator on the charger.

The desktop seems to be fine when it has power - but then something happens and it just dies.

I have to keep the battery disconnected otherwise I cannot even get the indicator to light once the onboard battery/capcacitor whatever it is - discharges.... Do you still think it is the logic board?

I will say that this is only a minute or so from the mac being powered up to dead. Again without a connection to the battery.

@wheezingwombat - OK, lets disconnect the MagSafe & battery again and leave the battery disconnected. Now press the power button a good minute. Now plug in the MagSafe your system should spontaneously start and stay running (don't bang the MagSafe connection) Are you able to achieve this?

@danj I tried several times. I held the power button for a minute (or over) and then slotted in the magsafe which would then power and go green. It would then go yellow (possibly as there is no battery). The machine would power on, sometimes only for a few seconds, sometimes for a minute or so. Typically it wont finish starting up before the magsafe would lose the indicator light and it would turn off....

OK, let's look at that MagSafe charger is it the correct one for your system? Review this Apple T/N Find the right power adapter and cable for your Mac notebook it should be a 60W MagSafe unit. How is the health of the cable is it worn, damaged or twisted?

You may need to get a new charger to figure out whats happening here. Make sure you get a REAL Apple charger! Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters

I have tried several magsafe chargers.. All with the same result. They work fine on other macs but just not on mine.

And thank you again Dan for staying with me on this one.
