Why does my fridge never stop running and is never cold enough?

Hello. Yesterday, I bought a second hand fridge combined with a bottom freezer compartment. It is a tall appliance and since we did not have a car to transport it vertically, we transported it at an angle, during a 30 mins-long ride. Also, it was carried horizontally by 2 men up and down the stairs. The man who helped me with it switched it on after 2 hours (I wanted to leave it standing for 24 hours but he told me that it was unnecessary). Ever since then, for over 24 hours, the fridge has been running constantly. It never stops. Even on a maximum setting, the temperature is always around 46 degrees. And there is a thin layer of “snow” at the back of the fridge. Is it broken? Have we broken it by transporting it the way we did and by switching it on too early? What would it cost to repair it approximately? Thank you in advance.

Hey Elke.

There’s really no consensus regarding the potential for damage to fridge transported in manners other than upright, but generally speaking, it should be ok. It could be that some deposits shaken loose during transport could have plugged or restricted an orifice, etc., I guess, but probably not likely.

You didn’t state a model number for your fridge, and it’d be better if you would, as this helps get away from generalities and differences in the technology (over time). But here’s a few things to consider, generally speaking, anyway:

Check behind the panel at the back of the freezer to see if the fan motor is operating. This is the part that distributes the cold air throughout the appliance. When you hear the compressor running this fan should also be running.

Another fan that should be running when the compressor is running is the one at the back, on the bottom, next to the compressor.

Other things are in play, as well, but really don’t have the info needed.

Is the freezer freezing with the fridge too warm? Or is neither compartment getting cold? Does each compartment door close and seal like it should?

Can be more helpful if you’ll provide a little more information.

Thank you so much for responding! The model number is WBE3116 W. The layer of snow forms only in the upper half of the fridge compartment. the bottom does not have this layer. I forgot to say that for some reason, there was a cable of the thermostat that had been pulled out and hanging at the back of the fridge (held in place by a piece of cork). The lady who sold me this fridge told me that it had no effect on its functionality ...

Unfortunately Elke so far I'm unable to find very much of anything for that model number, except that it's a European, and it appears to be designed without many features typically found with modern refrigerators in the US. Will continue to search for something useful.

I suggest that you turn the fridge off for at least 24 hours, more if you can afford to have it off longer (up to 36 hours perhaps).

This should allow any lubricating oil that has been pumped through the sealed system along with the refrigerant (or flowed there when the fridge was not vertical) to drain back into the compressor where it belongs.

After this turn the fridge on again and allow it to run. It may run a lot so give it at least 24 hours to get the temps correct and then check the temps in both the freezer and fridge sections
