When to reball, and when to replace

So I know with some chips, such as an iPhone charging IC, you need to replace. But some chips, such as an iPhone baseband IC, you can reball instead of replacing. When do you know when to reball, and when to replace?

Too much info for a comment.

If possible you should always use new chips on a charging circuit, they can cop a fair bit of abuse buy people using wrong leads, chargers and accessory devices like fans. It is like servicing your car, you wouldn’t put the old oil back in. You can reball them if you have to but they don’t cost very much.

Baseband chips on the iPhone need to be reballed as they are married to the CPU. That’s why you always see people reballing them.

Most people reball chips to eliminate as much heat as possible when putting them back on. The iPhone 7 audio IC is one example as you have the baseband on the other side which is under filled. If you put heat on an under filled chip the solder balls will expand and cause bridging. If you use leaded solder paste it will melt at about 187 degrees where the unleaded chips from china will melt at 217 degrees the same temperature as the baseband balls underneath.

The more time you spend microsoldering the easier it will be for you to determine which chips are best to reball and which chips are not. You will learn from your mistakes but preferably on a donor board and not a customers.

Well you only really need to reball if the chip is either expensive to buy a replacement or cannot be replaced.

Depends as replacing chip with a preballed one is always quicker than reballing the chip.

With touch IC / audio IC I prefer replacement preballed. Saves time of reballing.

Reballing baseband may be needed if it's obvious liquid got under the chip and has caused corrosion under the solder balls.

So for example, is it necessary to replace a charging IC, or could I reball it if I wanted to. Every video I see always replaces it, however every video I see for baseband reballs it.

There wouldn't be any reason to reball charging IC unless it was liquid damaged but even then this is a part that is very cheap to buy in bulk and if there's something wrong with it almost 99.9% of the time it's going to need a replacement rather than a reball as the chip is faulty.

If we are talking about main baseband chip this one doesn't get replaced on 6 and higher. Since chip is paired with board it must be used to get the phone working.
