Trackpad is hard to click at center-top (MacBook Pro 2018, 15”)

Hi,

My trackpad is very hard to click (force touch) at the center-top, near the spacebar. It seems the nearer it is to this “blind spot”, the more force it needs to click. It works fine on the borders and bottom.

It feels like there’s something stuck INSIDE the trackpad. Does that even make sense? I’ve searched the web and a lot of people talk about expanded batteries, but that’s for older models and it's unlikely the case as this Macbook is relatively new.

Is there something I could do about it?

If there's really a possibility of dirt stuck inside it, opening the Macbook and blow compressed air inside the trackpad could help?

I’ve tried SMC and PRAM reset to no avail.

Thanks!

Had the same problem here. Center of the track pad (Macbook Pro 2019 15) was barely responsive and had to be pressed extremely hard to elicit a feedback. Deep massage of the trackpad , from all sides, solved it. Thank you

I tried other trackpads and decided something was definitelly off in mine. I've downloaded BetterTouchTool and in the affected area, the pressure wouldn't register. I was almost ordering a replacement trackpad. Eventually I've massaged my trackpad on center going to top, clicking hard on it, and suddenly I heard something just "cracking". I thought: oops, broke it. But no, it was working again! The center-top now clicks just like the center-bottom. I guess I displaced the foreign body, dirt, or whatever, that was stuck inside the trackpad.

The same story here. At first I thought that my battery began to blow up. Which would be sad enough. But a massage helped, doing which I heard something like sand particles were cracking underneath trackpad. And now everything is working fine. Thank you! You just stopped me from long and hard disassembly of my machine.

You're pure genius. The same happened to me and it worked.

Thank you so much. Such a simple but effective solution!

Your touchpad is not like the older trackpads, that’s one of the biggest distinctions between the two.

The older trackpad had a small switch on the backside so when you depressed on it the trackpad the whole unit would bend down to engage the switch. The newer Touchpad uses a very different approach! Here the surface of the touch area has the ability to measure the force applied. There is no moving parts!

So why is this not working??

Unlike the older 2015 models touchpad, the newer 2016 onwards use a GIGANTIC Touchpad!!

So Apple needed a way to isolate your finger press Vs a palm press as your palms sit on it too. Frankly, this was a design failure! As the tech to tell the difference is not good enough!

The surface can become confused by skin oils and junk so you need to keep it spotless! In addition the inner area are assumed to be where you press the outer 1/4 of the surface area is less sensitive by design! So if you are pressing on the top edge it won’t respond (FYI - this is also true with the older design as well as that’s the hinge location).

So there is nothing here to fix. No debris or other stuff jamming it up. While its possible the battery could be pressing up on the case your system is to new for that.

Hi! First of all thanks for your answer.

I'd like to give an update on that!

You're right, however, about the accidental touch detection rendering some of the trackpad unclickable. It happens on center-right and left, though,

I tested Dan’s theory on that. First I tried to force click with something other than my finger, top of a pen for instance. Obviously it didn’t register cause no heat or electricity detected I assume. Then I just rested one of my finger in the middle (no pressing) and with the pen I pressed the edges of touch bar. It registered it all even the ones that are on the line between the case and touchbar.
