L3 on left analog stick for PS4 controller finicky

When I push in the L3 button on my ps4 controller, it engages, but will short out after a random amount of time. So I then have to un press and then push down the left stick again to get the button to engage.

Is this a common issue? I’ve had 2 other controllers do this as well and I’m curious if there’s something I’m doing to wear the controller out quickly? Also, is there a way to fix this behavior?

Obviously this is frustrating for games that use the L3 button for things like sprinting. It causes the character to come in and out of sprinting randomly.
