Wifi very weak, but antenna correctly attached

Hi guys and gals and non-binary folk!

I got my hands on an Asus x205ta (used, off a local eBay type site) and managed to get it working just fine.

The issue I noted was that the wifi range was appalling. I took it apart, and inspected the cable connecting to the wifi chip - I unseated and then re-seated it carefully, making sure it clicked right.

Once I removed the cable, the connectivity was lost entirely. Once I placed it back, it went up to one bar (for comparison, I have the same type of notebook right next to this one, showing full strength on the home network). The router in this scenario is about 3 feet (one meter) away and unobstructed.

I then took it apart, and removed the screen bezel to be able to follow the antenna cable, but it all seemed to be well seated an connected. There were no visible sign of damage on the cable itself, nor on the antenna connection.

I also tried treating this as a potential software issue and downloaded the drivers from the Asus site for the correct Win version (win10 32bit).

Any advice is appreciated!

Thanks!

hi there,

presuming you have already done the obvious of updating the WIFI drivers from the laptop manufacturer, or the WIFI card manufacturer ( if available )

my money is on either a faulty WIFI card or the cable has internal damage.

does the wifi card get warmer than usual?

i had very similar recently and it was the cable. the external cover was untouched but due to poor cable routing it caused internal damage.

replaced the wifi cable with a random one to test and was perfect.

Thanks! I’ll disassemble it again, and check the card and the cable - given how the strength of the signal does vary in relation to the distance of the router, your bet on the cable might be on spot.

Will update a bit later.

What was your result? I have the same problem.

OP suggestions are good. Also, try deleting the driver in device manager and let Plug ‘n Play reset the driver. Delete old drivers, too, if able. I have seen one manufacturer’s driver degrade another. Ie, did original owner install an “AC” adapter with drivers and left drivers in place when he sold the laptop with the built in “N” hardware?

Alternatively, try WiFi with your own USB adapter that does not use the system antenna.
