1 Power Problem? Erratic shutdown
Hi Everyone,
Ok so my 13” MacBook was working great until I turned it on this morning. Came to log in page, typed my password then went to get my coffee, came back and laptop was off. Tried turning it on again and was unresponsive.
Tried SMC and PRAM, nothing. Then it started up randomly but switched off at log in screen. Then turned on again but off at apple screen. Let it sit for a while, tried again and same process happened.
Now what is weird is the USB ports all have power as if the laptop is on, but nothing else. I have to hold the power button for the USB ports to loose power and the laptop be totally off.
Battery is 97% charged. Just tried one last time and the laptop came on, logged in and I got maybe 3 min of use from it before it randomly turned off again! Desperately need my laptop and just wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to what this might be?
I have recently (1 month) replaced my logic board. However this seems more like a power management problem?

Can you give us some background on your system. Did you have a liquid spill at some point? Did you replace the logic board or did someone else? Why was it replaced?
Are you able to enter into Target Disk Mode and is the system stable in that state?

Thanks for the reply,
No liquid as far as I remember on the old board. New board 100% not. I replaced it personally and took every care to do it properly. Replaced as old logic board had the 3 beep death sentence.
Basically last night all was well. Then the above happened this morning. It turned on and allowed me to log in etc earlier, then 2 min later turned off with no warning. Now it isn’t very responsive. It turned on again recently with the chime but off again straight away. When I tried again fan just was on high rev.
What is target disk mode? When I tried to launch in recovery mode it got 2/3rds away loading and then died.
Just worried as I left it plugged in last night and scared a surge got it. Just don’t understand how it turned on a few times this morning if that was the case. Absolute nightmare.

Press and hold the T key when you restart your system. I gave you a link with all of the startup options (Blue URL).
It does sound like your replacement logic board has failed. Contact the person you bought it from to see if you can get a replacement under warranty.
It could have been about to fail before you got it, you could have zapped it (ESD) and I guess its possible a surge did you in as well (power or lighting).
I do strongly recommend when replacing logic board using a proper ESD safeguards (Mat & wrist strap which is tied to earth ground) And yes using a surge suppressor or better yet a UPS. Most of the time power supplies get the worse of it.

Apologies for not seeing the link. I did use the wrist strap when I replaced the board. It has been working great for over a month.
Ok so it booted to target disk mode, but just turns itself off after 30secs or so. If I leave the laptop sitting there for a day then it boots again and lasts maybe 1 min before turning itself off.
So frustrating and I am in a location with no apple people nearby.
