Is it possible to replacement the keyboard with a next-gen one

Hello,

I noticed that the keyboard on the 2017 macbook 12” is far more comfortable than the on on my 2015 model. So, I’m wondering: is it possible to replace the keyboard of my 2015 model with a 2nd generation butterfly keyboard to take advantage of the deeper mechanism?

Let me explain a bit here on what did and didn’t change. The first two generations of butterfly keyboards have the same design and throw with some slight improvements within the keys to help prevent them from popping off. The key throw is the same between them.

The 3rd generation had a major change by a silicon sheet added that creates a gusset around each key which you can read up on here MacBook Pro 13" Touch Bar 2018 Keyboard Teardown.

The keys throw did not change but the silicon did add a bit of resistance so you maybe noting that and the noise from the key strike is a bit muted otherwise no differences between the different keyboards.

As for upgrading your system, Apple needed to redesign the uppercase to make room for the added silicone sheet so there is no upgrade option - Sorry ;-{

Thank you very much for your answer Dan.

So, if I well understood, I can replace the first-gen keyboard by a second-gen keyboard but not by a third-gen keyboard. Is that right?

Well... Yes as the 1st & 2nd's use the same uppercase.

BTW I wouldn't bother swapping out unless your keyboard was bad. You won't notice any difference in feel or strike. Only the 3rd gen has any feel difference, but has no strike difference (same distance as the others)
