USB port not working

Hi, my right usb port stopped working on my 15 inch 2013 late Macbook Pro. I saw that it’s possible to replace the port itself, along with HDMI and card reader (I/O board), but both HDMI and Card reader work. Also, the USB port does send some power to the device connected but there’s no data coming through.

I am slightly worried that the problem might be more down the line, and I got a quote from a repair shop for over 220 Euros, and they said the’ll have to solder some tricky stuff, which got me even more worried.

Other USB port is working perfectly.

Any opinions on this problem? Thanks in advance.

Try a SMC reset.

  1. Shutdown your MacBook Pro.
  2. Connect the charger to the Mac.
  3. On the MacBook Pro’s keyboard, hold down the Shift+Control+Option keys and the Power button at the same time.
  4. Release all keys and the power button at the same time – the little indicator on the MagSafe charger may change colors briefly to indicate the SMC has reset.
  5. Boot your Mac normally.

Also try giving it a clean out with an air compressor if you have one. If you don’t have an air compressor, lightly swipe a Q-TIP inside of the USB port carefully, if you’re not careful, you may damage one of the contacts inside the USB port, completely disabling it.

Hope I could help.

Tried the SMC reset few times, and cleaning it as well, no help. I believe the problem is on the logic board sadly.

How about checking the port using a USB meter like this one USB Mini Voltmeter

You might want to try first replacing the MacBook Pro 15" Retina (Late 2013-Mid 2014) I/O Board Data Cable, then you’ve proven the issue is the MacBook Pro 15" Retina (Late 2013-Mid 2014) Right I/O Board. Here’s the IFIXIT guide MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Late 2013 I/O Board Replacement

Hi Dan, i'm troubleshooting a MPBr 15" Late 2013 from which i suspect a faulty IO-board connector. After a SMC-reset the USB-port works, SD card reader doesn't (haven't tried HDMI). Also randomly the Flex cable gets hot to the touch (which indicates shorting?). I've noticed that the metal shielding on the IO-board is loose on one side, this is used for grounding i presume? Can this be the cause of the issues i'm seeing?

Before i'm ordering all the parts you've mentioned i'd like to pinpoint it a bit more. The issues started after i've replaced the 7-year old battery. I haven't checked the IO-board datacable on the Logicboard side. Should i check this? Does the Flexcable go bad as easily as the datacable does?

No need! You've got a short!

From the sounds of it you go a bad I/O board as the shield should be firmly mounted and your cable maybe damaged as well from the high current load being pushed through it.

The shield is a Faraday Cage - EMI shield to protect sensitive components. Just like a paper cup which can hold water it can also float on water! The emissive signal can be inside or outside of the container like the cup with water. The EMI designer decides which way the shield is to be used. It needs to be grounded the chassis which in its self is a Faraday cage as well as its a full metal enclosure.

@danj Thanks for replying Dan!

So the EMI shield should protect it from interference and only works when properly grounded? Shouldn't explain the high current right? Your advice is to replace the flex cable and I/O-board? And maybe order the datacable as well, and if not needed return that?

Haven't got the Macbook with me right now as it's from a friend, but i'll check the Datacable on the Logicboard side aswell, as it does work for USB, just not for SD card reader. The SD card reader get's recognized properly, just doesn't mount anything or detect a SD card. SD card works in a MBA 2014. Thanks again!

You should only need the I/O board and the I/O board cable. The data cable is for the video signal to the HDMI port.

What is ground? What you are walking on? What if you are in the ISS floating over head?

The words meaning in this context implies electrial ground. The chassis of the TV which is covered by a plastic & glass box so you can't touch it! A light fixture in the ceiling again maybe the pull chain to turn it on, Or, the metal case of your computer. Check out the link I posted on "Faraday Cage" if you want more.
