Toshiba NAND Flash Memory - one or two chips?

Does the iPod Touch 4th Gen 64 GB contain one or two NAND flash memory chips? From your picture, only one is visible. I'm curious if that one chip is the 64GB capacity, or are there 2 x 32GB chips?

Thanks

I don't have an iPod 4th Gen to reference to, but I'm almost certain that it has 2 chips. The 3rd generation iPod touch had a 2-chip configuration on both the 32GB and 64GB models, which would lead me to believe that the 4th generation does too. Also, the iPod touch that iFixit tore-down was an 8GB model. 8GB iPods only use one chip.

That really isn't possible. You would need to remove the epoxy surrounding the chips, then use a rework machine to remove and replace the chips. That's incredibly difficult, unless you're highly skilled with a rework machine.

Is it on the motherboard? You could just replace the motherboard.

Yes, you could just buy a new motherboard and install it. However, motherboards are expensive and hard to come by, you may be better off just buying a whole new iPod.

It is possible with a micro soldering kit and a stereo microscope, but my question is if the system files are on the NAND chip. If so then I would imagine it would be difficult to detect the ipod after instalation of a new chip. Does anyone know if the operating system is on the main NAND chip or on a separate one?

All the 4th gen iPod touch units utilize a single nand chip, whether they are 8,32 or 64 GB. The 3rd gen units used a pair of 16GBs for 32GB or a pair of 32GBs for 64GB. Late 2nd gen units had provision for a pair of BGA nand chips (same as 3rd gen), but mostly used only one 8GB chip and rarely a pair of 4GBs for 8GB or a pair of 16GBs in the 32GB unit. Earlier 2nd gen units used single or double (stacked) DIP nand chips.

The upshot of all this is that if a person had two irreparable 4th gen 64GB units with functioning nand, chips these could in theory be transplanted into a late 2nd or any 3rd gen iPod Touch, to create what may well be the worlds only 128GB iPod Touch. Provided the chips were wiped out of circuit, the bootrom should realize the absence of iOS, kick into DFU, iTunes will see it, and restore the firmware... Any thoughts?
