Why won't my phone screen light up even if the phone is on?

Yesterday while I was using my phone the screen went completely black. At first I thought the battery just ran out, so I charged it, but it still wouldn’t turn on. Since then, I’ve figured out that the phone itself is still running perfectly fine, but the screen itself just won’t work. Sometimes when I rapidly press the home button, the phone screen will turn on, but it’s only temporary, and it doesn’t work every time. I have no idea what could be causing this problem or how I could fix it. I have tried everything and nothing has helped.
