White lines across the top of the screen and touchscreen unresponsive

7 months ago, I had my busted iPhone 6 Plus replaced at the Apple Store. The replacement I got was great until two weeks ago when these white lines appeared (shown in video).

They cause the touchscreen to become unresponsive and do not appear in screenshots. At first I was able to apply slight pressure to the top of the screen and the problem would be solved for a couple minutes. Now it is constantly happening, no matter what I try.

That issue is caused by the touch IC which is a chip on the logic board.

These go bad from a defect the 6 pluses have, basically over time the touch IC looses connection to the board due to a combination of the following:

  • non leaded solder (the solder balls that make the connection under that chip)
  • The iPhone housing easy to bend / flex, causes the logic board to flex and then develop cracks on those solder balls)

Getting the chip replaced and having the weak connections to the chip reinforced with jumper wires if needed will fix this problem.

Look for a reputable repair shop that does board level repairs for iPhones and they'll be able to help you out with this issue.

Do you have a general idea as to how much this repair would cost?

The going rate should be around $100 and you need to be sure that the shop is doing the state of the art permanent fix which is "the M1 jumper repair" If they are not familiar with that phrase then keep shopping.

Hi Jordan,

Welcome to touch disease. This single problem outnumbers all other iPhone logic board level problems combined.

While it took the independent repair community years to finally deduce the core problem (The HIFA_BSYNC line that connects to the meson touch controller chip), it is extremely straightforward to make a robust repair. The M1 pad under meson becomes loose/stretchy/weakened through the normal daily use of the phone. This is the manifestation of a design flaw that was present on day one—the logic board is screwed down into the relatively flexible/bendy housing which means that the board is subjected to flexion forces that it can not withstand. One the M1 pad which connects the HIFA_BSYNC line to the chip is sufficiently weak, the classic flickering grey/white bars appear at the top of the screen and touch stops working. This intermittent problem will become worse over time leading ultimately to no touch function at all.


The fix is to lift meson, reball it or swap it for a new one, but most importantly—-add a reinforcing jumper wire to the M1 pad under meson. This will solve the problem and immunize your phone from having a recurrence down the road. Most local microsolderers will have plenty of experience with this problem since most busy shops see it daily.
