Do you have a specific make/model of this washer? I did a search and found something that might be helpful (this was a front loading Kenmore but I expect the controls have some common features/protections and Whirlpool makes many of these machines):

''The washer has a line voltage filter in it that suppresses any voltage issues prior to making it to the control board. There are times when the connections become corroded and start causing issues.

Be sure to unplug the washer prior to diagnosing or repairing it.

I suggest removing the top and following the power cord into the machine. There is a module that the power cord goes into and that is the power filter. Unplug and re-plug the wires at the filter and at the electronic control and then reassemble that washer. This may solve the issue. ''

The person said that you may have to replace the control board which is surely expensive.
