When I press the power button the screen is a solid faint light. There is no faint images and nothing appears when I shine a bright light on the screen. Any ideas as to the problem and how to fix would be great.

i would plug in the device and start a hard reset. :Hold the power button and home button down together for 20 seconds, or until you see an apple logo.
If the above doesnt work, try a recovery mode software reload: Get the device into recovery mode, or DFU if you can. Do this by plugging the device into the computer, and performing the DFU recovery steps. (Hold the power and home buttons together for about 15 seconds, or until your device tries to re-boot. Upon this, release the power button, and continue holding your home button for about 20 seconds. your PC should say you are installing your drivers) once these drivers are installed, itunes should prompt you to recover your device. PLEASE BE ADVISED: THIS WILL ERASE ALL OF YOUR DATA
Next look into an LCD replacement.
Anything further than this, will likely board level failure.
