I know this is an old question but if audio related problems are not resolved by software or modular repairs, then read on…

The iPhone 7 series of devices have proven to be very unreliable, suffering from flex-based issues similar to the iPhone 6 Plus (Touch Disease). On the iPhone 7, the fault line runs along the top of the SIM card reader and affects the Baseband CPU and Audio IC. Any short copper traces running perpendicular to the fault line while connecting to micro-BGA pads, is subject to failing.

On the Audio IC, this particularly affects the C12 pad/trace although there are 4 pads/traces along the fault line. Of those four, the C12 pad (I2S_AP_TO_CODEC_MCLK) is the most critical as it is a communication protocol line between the CPU and the Audio IC. ''''

Here are the typical symptoms, as collated by the repair community:

  1. Voice Memos app / Loudspeaker on call - greyed out
  2. Siri doesn’t hear you / Caller can’t hear you
  3. Most other Audio related issues that aren’t solved by modular replacements
  4. Long boot times (3-5 minutes)
  5. iTunes detects the phone but stuck on the Apple Logo

This is a repairable problem but it requires a micro-soldering repair. Although it can be a routine repair for an experienced tech, it can go sideways very quickly as the Audio IC is directly opposite the underfilled Baseband CPU.  An unqualified tech can apply too much heat and cause massive problems. So do your due diligence.

It might be that the Intel and Qualcomm boards do not suffer the issue the same way, however for one reason or another the Audio IC gets caught in picture one way or the other. I could only speculate that being the Intel Baseband so much bigger it provides boards a somewhat better strenght or stiffness. Just bringing my own small experience about it, but despite the many Audio IC repairs I had to run jumpers just a handful of times and never had a return on phones where the U3101 was just replaced.

@arbaman that's an interesting observation. I am certainly not flooded with Audio IC repairs here in Canada the way we see and hear about them in the US.

@refectio It seems we are more or less sharing the same pattern then! The big exception here are the floods of boards with chinese stamps and labels on them, that include quite often bad and/or, I got the feeling, time pressured repairs coming from far east. I had the impression watching Rewa videos and their apparently top notch equipment that average chinese repair labs were unfortunately well above those of western world..well, no more, BB troubles on those board seem to be more the rule than an exception, it's usually just a matter of time.

Hello Mahin,

There are multiple ways to fix this issue. First, have you tried restarting your iPhone? Don’t just power it off, but hold the power button and lower volume rocker until the screen turns black and shows an apple logo. If this doesn’t work, make sure your iPhone is up to date on the most recent update. Lastly, if neither of those work, it most likely is just broken and needs to be fixed. You can either fix it yourself by replacing the ear speaker or taking it into a repair shop and having them do it. Just a FYI, if you do attempt to repair it yourself and break your phone, I am not liable.

Hope this helps!

Even though I haven't got an apple phone I want a Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus same issues I went through the same process as what you described and I'm failing it could be worse you could be broken phones only been 3 months old since launch highly disappointed with Samsung software and products but thank you very much I'll get on to network provider and they'll have to deal with it

Hey Martin, its not the software of Samsung causing your issue. If my suggestions did not work, then it it most likely a faulty unit (that is if the repair does not work) and Samsung has a 1 year warranty meaning you can get a new one.
