Try connecting an external monitor to the laptop to check what its' display is like after the laptop has started.

If there is no display on the external monitor either then there is a problem with the motherboard in the laptop.

If the external monitor displays an image of the desktop after the laptop has booted, try shining a torch at an angle close to the laptop's screen and check if you can detect an image at all. It will be very faint if it is there.

If there is an image detected on the laptop screen, then there is a screen backlight problem. This could be caused by a faulty backlight power supply (on the motherboard), a faulty video cable, a faulty video cable connection at either end (motherboard or screen), a faulty lid switch or a faulty screen.

If there is no image detected on the laptop screen then the problem could be a faulty video cable, faulty video cable connection at either end, (motherboard or screen), or a faulty screen.

HP has the service manuals for most of its laptops online. Just search for HP DV7 (insert model number) service manual to get the link. Once on the HP webpage relevant to the laptop select User Guides and then find the link to download the Maintenance and Service Guide.

The service guide details all the pre-requisite steps and the procedures to remove all the components of the laptop. It also lists the part numbers for all the various parts.
