Errors E106 and E101

I get error E106 whenever I boot and when I try to update or factory reset I get E101. I used the factory update trick by holding eject and bind even after two beeps with a USB drive plugged in to instantly start updating but every time I try to update or factory reset I get error E101. When it says checking update, i checked on the drive and saw that it does move the update files to the disk but it doesn't install them. I have repartitioned the hard drive with ludvig jerabeks Linux tool. I tried every USB option available. Any ideas on what these error codes actually mean? I know E101 has something to do with updating.

Oh and I can't send it to Microsoft because my warranty period has ended and I don't want to pay half the retail price just to let them repair a known issue.

I've found out that e106 means that the osu1 files aren't the right ones. This probably means my console is in the insider program. I bought this console off ebay so I don't know. I'm gonna look up my dashboard version tomorrow.

UPDATE

I've tried another partitioning script because the previous one was a bit shady. The console still shows the error when it finishes the 'installing update' part. Error E106 is a problem with the files. My dashboard version is from October '17 so it isn't an insider program version. I hope this information helps.

I ran into this problem on a One S as well. I tried everything including switching HDD with a known working One S HDD and OSU1/2/3 update files.. Nothing worked.

I finally got the One S working again, simply by using another usb stick to put the update files on. My USB stick worked fine on another One S for update, but not on this particular console. So I put te update files on a different USB stick, and started the update: and it worked.

So try using a different brand / make of USB stick in this problem. Might help U as well. Kind Regards Jules

I had also problem with Offline update on my One X. It always ended with an error. But when I changed usb stick( thanks Jules ) then everything started working.

Did you get an answer? I am stuck in the same loop. Initially got a green screen, then got error code 106, then got e102 then tried offline update and staright away it goes to e101 error without even trying to download the files. Been quoted £204 via microsoft, am not paying this for a console that is a year and a half old and cost nearly £500 in first place :(

Hello!

I just wanted to chime in here as I have found what causes this issue and I want to publish it to save people from future headaches.

The issue is that the onboard console flash is updated to an OS version that is NEWER than what you have on your HDD and/or recovery flash drive. Even if the flash version is just a day newer than the version you have on the drive, it will throw this error and leave you in an endless error loop not allowing you to do anything.

To fix this, go to to the Xbox Support website and download the current newest OSU1 files and reformat your hard drive using those new files, and put the new $SystemUpdate folder on your recovery flash drive to boot into. Once you’ve done this, go ahead and perform the offline system update and then factory reset as you normally would it will work smoothly and you’ll be back up and running!

Hope I helped! I spent hours trying to figure this out, and hopefully now other folks won’t have to

i have the same issue with the E 101 error , and have tried to do the “offline update” off the usb stick . But i cant get it to work with crashing back to the trouble shoot screen. Some time the install doesnt start at or it get up to 32 % installed then crashes.

MS support has not been much help.

I did all this and it still doesn't work. I still get the same error e106. I have downloaded the latest OSU1 file.

What is meant by reformat Hdd using these files? Is there an additional manual step to perform?

完成的

Thanks for that, was also my problem after a recent ssd install, where my Xbox had updated after install, and my OSU1 copy was out of date. Appreciate you :)

Does it have to be USB 3.0?

E101 is an update error. microsoft has the solution here, you will need a empty/unimportant flashdrive handy for this. https://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-one/...

E106 is a startup error. microsoft also has a guide for this. you may or may not need a flash drive for this one too. https://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-one/...

As I mentioned before e106 isn't a normal startup error and as I mentioned before I have already tried this but Microsoft just wants me to send it to them an pay them half the f@!?ing retail price

oops. I a going to admit I read the title only and not the actual question, which is not appropriate here. feel free to downvote this. anyhow, what was happening before you got the error?

完成的

I don't know what was happening because i bought this Xbox off ebay for a couple bucks.

完成的

Could you fix this error?

完成的

See my post below to fix it, basically it’s that your OSU1 files are older than the version on the console flash.

Using the OSU latest update http://www.xbox.com/xboxone/osu1 on a USB drive.

Only caveat was to keep the network cable plugged in!

USB plugged in.

Restarted so many times using the bluetooth and eject button held down.

Reset Xbox (don’t keep games)

Just in case anyone is still looking for a solution or anyone in the future. I redownloaded the OSU1 files (the exact same files I used for restoring previous Xboxes) and tried to do the offline update on the recent Xbox I acquired. It threw the E106 error and chose the offline update again. I did it a few times before trying a different avenue. After it failed, I took another look at my thumb drive on my pc to see if I downloaded them correctly and noticed I had a $SystemUpdate folder (with the files) inside of a $SystemUpdate folder. I erased the duplicate and ensured that there was only one $SystemUpdate folder with the files in it. It is my understanding that the files must be in a folder titled “$SystemUpdate” in order for this to work correctly. So I ejected the thumb drive, inserted into Xbox and turned it on. Xbox got to 4% and threw the E106 code. Chose Offline update and the files are now installed and it is taking me through the initial setup. This may work for you too. Hope it helps.

Do the quotations need to be added or are you just emphasizing the name of the folder??

完成的

Emphasizing the name of the folder. I really think the folder has to take that name and contain the necessary files for it to work.

I’m having the same issue, E106 System Error. Mine started out with my system shutting down whenever i would start a match in game. i was able to use apps and watch videos or movies but no games. i sent it into a local Tech repair shop and they made it worse, now i’m stuck on the “Something went wrong System Error: E106”. I’m actually shocked to see how many people are dealing with the same issue for this long and Microsoft has no answers or help to give.

Yeah Kevin it's some bull s#!t. Been stuck in a e106 e101 loop fur over a year. Praying Microvaginas release a up date one day that will fix these errors :( still trying

SAME ISSUE!

So the other day I’m playing battlefront II and my 1TB Xbox One X freezes and when I restart I get e102. I try every reset known to man (ALL THE options , all the YouTube VIDS). I try running the latest OSU1 (11-02-20) from THREE different working USB 2.0 flash drives formatted NTFS. When it starts —> 1% —> E101 error. (No clue if I am insider program because I bought recently from someone on Facebook - I set it up from scratch After I bought it from them. Did not enroll insider and played two weeks on Xbox live flawlessly before it crashed.

I decided to buy a brand new Samsung evo 500GB SSD and…

 1) formatted and partitioned it adding system files from OSU1 and boot animation then installed &reset. E106 again. Ran OSU1 on flash stick. E101. WIPED SSD.

2) installed SSD fresh and tried to reset and run OSU1. E101.

STILL CANNOT GET MY NEW DRIVE TO RUN THE PROGRAM.

What’s the issue here y’all?

I repair certain Old Retro Game Players and decided to try my hand at repairing the XBOX ONE 1540. I bought two broken players at a very low price. One was in great looking shape and still factory sealed. I first started working on this player. I tried to boot it up but no video showed up on the screen. I read somewhere that the hard drive can cause this. I took the hard drive out of the second player I bought and installed it. Well now I had video. Error 106 and then of course Error 101 after attempting to reset it or use OSU1 with a USB drive. I thought it might need a new hard drive so I bought a 500 gb new for $20. I looked and found all the files to create an XBOX Drive. Same crap Error 106 and 101. So I went the extra mile and bought a used working mother board with the disc drive married circuit board. I took it completely apart and put it back together. It now works perfectly. Does anyone know what is bad on the motherboard I took out ? This will solve the problem for many people having this problem. I hope someone knows !
