Can you explain what your issue is your statement is confusing as you can boot under BootCamp with Linux using the internal drive and the internal drive could be an SSD or a HDD.
because the internal drive on the new iMac 21.5 is 5400 rpm drive. I thought maybe I could run Sierra off an external ssd with thunderbolt 3 drive. It would be faster.
Are you using Linux or MacOS here?
