Somewhere there was a question “where can I find temperature and fan speed”..
There are some nice tools, but this seems the easiest way for me.

Just run the command in terminal shell:

sudo powermetrics

be aware that this command requires admin privileges. So if you are logged in and your account has admin privs you are asked to enter your login password. ..
Also notice that the program does not end. So in order to do so you have to close the terminal window or <ctl>C ..

A Macbook Pro fan should always be on. However it should not be excessively noisy or running at a high speed all the time. If it is running at maximum RPM (usually about 6000 on a Macbook Pro), this indicates there is software running on your Mac that is stressing the CPU or GPU.

Open Activity Monitor to see which apps are using the most CPU. You can also see which apps are using the most energy as well. Apps like Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, and VMware Fusion/Parallels tend to cause the fans to speed up, as the temperature of your CPU/GPU will increase when using those apps.

Disable Flash in your browser. Flash is now disabled by default in Firefox. In Chrome, you can use Flashcontrol to disable instances of Flash (it still allows you to view Flash on a per-site basis as needed). It’s one of the biggest causes of CPU/GPU stress, and will no doubt increase your Macbook Pro fan speed because Flash is so intensive on hardware.

Restart your Macbook Pro. If the fan is continually running at a high speed, try a Restart.

If a restart doesn’t work, try resetting the SMC and PRAM. The SMC reset especially may help.

This answer would be more helpful if it had links to the suggestions for dealing with the fan issue. For example location of the activity monitor? steps to disable the flash? I followed the message advice below and cleared the browser history. It slowed fan for about five minutes, but then I noticed the fan speed ramped up again.

I did go and search for the Activity Monitor using the find it feature top right of screen and found it. I'll look for the other suggestions there as well.

One additional question, where do you find 'fan speed' data?

Thank you. Shutting down my opened Apps and browser immediately fixed the high fan noise.

A few helpful tips regarding Activity Monitor:

1. You can find it in your Utilities folder in Applications (so Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.app)

2. Sort by % CPU and it will bring the processes with high CPU usage to the top of the list

3. You can then double click on a process and click 'Quit' and the Activity Monitor will kill that process

I did this and found that just one individual Chrome tab was rated at about 300% CPU usage. All other process were well below 100%, like in the 20-25% range tops. I killed that specific process and closed that Chrome tab and the macbook fan immediately slowed down and sounded normal within a minute.

Refreshing the thermal paste has made a big difference to my MBP 2015, it was bone dry, now it is as quiet as a mouse!

I closed a ton of Google Chrome tabs and it calmed down. It woke me up in the middle of the night sounding like it was trying to take flight!

There may be others who keep many tabs open, but I have not found anyone like me who has 700+ tabs open. I repeat seven hundred tabs in words, to make my readers know that it is not a typo. While having that many tabs open is not a good idea, but these tabs really start impacting only if you visit them and they get refreshed. Otherwise, the supposedly smart browser programming keeps their energy sucking to a low level. The solution that I have tried and works without failing a single time is shutting down my browser and then restarting, this time making sure that even if I have 700+ tabs open, I visit and refresh them only if necessary. So do not try to visit your tabs on random, say for example, if you are trying to find a specific tab, and you keep going through half of them sequentially, you end up making the fan angry. :)

This doesn’t just happen when I’m doing any kind of heavy activity, it happens as soon as I turn on my laptop. And it’s constant. This is a new problem, it’s only been happening for about a month, I’ve had this machine for about three years.

I currently have the same problem. I was playing sims 4 and my laptop died and now every time I turn it on the fan starts and it is really loud. The only way to turn the fan noise off it to shut down my laptop. The light on the keyboard is not working and it says my laptop is on 0% and my charger is not working. However even if the charger is not plugged in I can still use it and the battery symbol has the charging symbol in it even if the charging cable is not plugged in. The charging cable does not light up at all and the laptop does not say it is charging at all. The battery symbol is no longer on the menu bar at the top right and when I click on the button show on menu bar it unticks itself no matter how many times I press it.

Reset your PRAM & SMC - Turn off the device. Start holding opt + cmd + P + R. Keep holding til it starts 3 times. After 3 let go. Turn off again. Press and hold shift +ctrl + opt + cmd on left side w/ power button and hold for 10 seconds. Release all then power up. You should see power cable light up.

I have had the same problem for about a year. Googling I found a suggested answer to try a different charging port. I've just tried that and so far it has worked really well (switched from right to left)

@Paula.Collins, this worked for me, even using Teams, Outlook and Chrome at the same time

Scott have you tried turning on your activity monitor? Open that up and then look at what is drawing the heavy load on your CPU. You have the option of closing the activity down. That will show on the scrolling digital readout of CPU use. Good luck.

I have the same problem with the fan on for a long time with no apparent reason. My MacBook Pro is 4.5 years. I checked the Activity Monitor and there was no excessive activities from running program. When I upgraded my Mac and have to transfer data from the old MacBook Pro to a new one, the IT tech told me the battery in the old MacBook was buckled and the trackpad was leveled with the body of MacBook. The IT tech told it to an Apple Store to get a quote to replace the battery. I was told the battery was at the early stage of “melting” and glued to the bracket inside. I have to replace the entire battery and bracket and will cost around $500. I was also told that I was carrying a potential fire hazard ……..

I've been having the same problem and mine is about 4 years old too. It all began after an update months ago and i haven't found a solution. I went to a local mobile device repair place and changed the battery this week ($120!! not the $500 apple price tag...shop around, many of the local places back their work and do a great job!) All this to say, I'm still having the same problem and the fan was constantly running with NOTHING OPEN! So frustrating. This is the first board I've seen where someone is having the same issues...what do we need to do about it?

完成的

@Christina Underwood - Install a good thermal monitoring app like TG Pro it will allow you to see what's happening. Most of the time it's a failing fan or the heatsink.

Christina.... MINE TOO! ALL HAPPENED AFTER AN UPDATE! It was so quiet before the update about 9 months ago...

I have to say mine has been doing it too. I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2012).

I didn’t notice it until sometime last year with OS upgrade. I also somehow lost my rights to my permissions and when I use terminal I get error messages installing node, npm and homebrew. It is so frustrating. I will get Visual Studio Code going, have my class running in a browser and terminal open and it sounds like my computer is going to get up and fly away the fan is so loud.

I have reinstalled the operating system. The fan is still running loud and my MacBook is now getting hot to touch. Its my favorite. I like the older version much more than the newer ones. I like have my optical drive and didn’t want to upgrade to have to lose that.

I will say talking with my friends in class that Google Chrome pulls a lot. You can see it on activity monitor. I switched to Brave at her suggestion and that does hold the fan off a lot longer.

There is so much more running behind Google’s browsers than we know. I’m going to try resetting the SMC and PRAM and let you know. I’m wondering if its the battery like the one guy stated. I run diagnostics and nothing comes up saying it is wrong.

For me it was because OneDrive app was using a lot of energy so I quit and uninstalled it. Open your activity monitor and see what is using the most energy on your mac, stopping the app might solve the problem.
