How to get the water temperature setting to work

Does anyone know how to get the water temperature setting to work on washer machine.?? ..I have a kenmore and the "water temperature" setting won't come on for the bulk/bedding. I've heard I have to press options button but have no idea for how long amd if there is more to it.... please help!
