I can't get remote to do anything

installed my fire stick last year. Since then i am able to click on netflix app on my tv from my frontier fios menu so i havnt used the alexa voice remote in a while. I wanted to use again to check my profile and try out hulu and discover what else i can do with my firestick. I have selected both hdmi ports and changed remote batteries but i cannot get a menu or anything to come up
