Touch ID is no longer responsive

Greetings everyone,

Let me give you a background on whats been happening...

So I have a 6s plus that has severe damage on the screen and housing however the internals of the phone are perfectly fine - In fact, the phone actually is usable and touch ID was working. (Even 3D Touch!)

However, from reading on iFixit (and I couldn't get a direct answer) it seems that from opening the iPhone and unplugging the lcd, digitizer and touch ID cables (after the turning the phone off of course) I may have short circuited the flex cable. It's quite odd because I've probably unplugged those 3 flex cables about 2-3 times before to inspect damage on the internals and the touch ID 'died' on me. I soon found out that I should have unplugged the battery before taking those out.

The phone gives me a warning that "Touch ID is not activated on this phone". I wanted to order a separate new button but I found out the original button is coded to the motherboard.

Now this is fine because I've ordered a new housing and LCD, but my question still remains, can I transfer the long flex cable from the new LCD metal shield and use that with the old button? And will that fix my touch ID?

From reading on various forums some say the Touch ID on button's mini flex cable may be fried but that is less likely. It seems the longer flex cable behind the metal shield can easily short circuit.

I really want touch ID back on this phone. It would be a nightmare to have to constantly type my password each time I need to quickly use the phone.

Finally, does anyone know what the "coupling grounding connector" does? It was somewhat bent from the external damage and I can seem to screw it back in due to the corner damage however the phone runs fine.

Iphone 6s does not have a standalone long flex for Touch ID, it is merged with the backlight/3D Touch thing.

First try a known good screen with your home button, if it works, it is more likely that the cable is torn.

If not, then try the seemingly broken screen on a working phone with that working phone's home button.

The best you can do is to narrow down to screen or home button/motherboard level, it is not possible to narrow down to one component by just swapping because the home button and board is one set, not swappable. Further troubleshooting would require professional equipment.

It is OK to disconnect the connectors without disconnecting the battery, as long as you are certain that the phone is fully powered off, not just sleeping. If you pull the connector off during sleep, anything that may trigger a wakeup event will crash the phone's OS because the missing devices at the other end are obviously not responding to any command, thus hanging everything. It is especially dangerous when the OS is crashed, the connector is stuck in a powered state because nothing is commanding it to shut off, then you reconnect it, that will very likely short and fry up everything.

I see. Does the home button have its own memory for touch ID or is that stored in the motherboard? Swapping a random LCD can disable touch ID due to security from what I've read

Trying the a home button is likely to trigger some lockout, the Touch ID cannot be recovered without putting the original button back AND doing a system restore. But just replacing the screen are not likely to trigger it as long as the screen is good.

The fingerprint data is stored in the system. Touch ID button only has storage for its own firmware and pairing key.

Coupling Ground Connector - It's just a connector for the NFC transceiver which is located around the apple logo of the iPhone housing if I'm correctly.

And for the home button extension cable. These are assembled together with the screen assembly and are not separable.

But I can theoretically remove the button from the lcd and transfer it to the new lcd? If so, will touch ID still be disabled?

Yep. The home button is removable. No idea if touch ID will still be disabled, could be a damaged home button but who knows until you try.

Sweet, I checked over the home button for any damage to the flex and it seems fine. It hasn't been touched either. Is there a way I can prevent the rubber gasket from breaking when I switch home buttons? I saw someone use a heat gun when removing it.

Heat gun is the best way. I use generally around 80°C. Sometimes I am just lazy and loosen the adhesive for the home button cable first then slowly push out the home button from the front.

I have replacement black home button rubber gaskets with adhesive in case I need to replace it.

so if the Coupling ground connecto is snapped the only lost functionality should be NFC related functions?

Try new lcd... if not then touch id is gone

Crossing my fingers and patiently waiting. Do you know what caused this? It was working fine a for months after the damage until about the 3rd time of opening phone.
