Can't charge by USB, wireless, won't turn on, just gets hot, no lights

Dad gave me his phone (he got a new one) with the only explanation that it wouldn't turn on.

Tried charging by USB and wireless. No lights, just gets hot.

Won't turn on, no power+volume down.

Dad says he took it in and got the battery replaced but cannot confirm.

Is this an obvious solution or replace piece by piece?
