Why won't background processes stay open?

So I'm using a BLU Advance 5.0 phone and nothing will stay running in the background. Apps that make firewalls won't work because the VPN's they create just go down shortly after the app is closed, and GPS joystick apps also won't work. What I'm getting from this is just that overall things won't stay open in the background. Is there any fix to this?
