How to open the back of Trackr Pixel

I have arthritic hands and the YouTube video (https://youtu.be/eNQNNUCk6GA) they have to open shows you to open it between your palms. I've talked their support staff and they insist that is the way to open it. I asked if their was a tool to open it and they told me no. I even had my next door neighbor who is much younger and stronger couldn't open it. I was wondering if anyone knows another way to open it to get to the battery?

as an aircraft mechanic i had the same problem. remedy, put the two sided sticker on the back and use your finger/ thumb on the sticker and it opens easy. you may ruin the adhesive but you have the battery out.

Recommendation to tracker: put an alignment arrow on the back because putting it back on can be difficult to align. also, put a coin slot on the back, not expensive improvement to make. :)

Poor design. How about putting something like a slight slot in the back where a penny or nickel would get enough grip to open it???

Okay, Here is how I got it open.

Duct Tape (Gorilla Tape in my case). Tear off a piece about the size as the Trackr Pixel, say .75" or so. The duct tape itself is the "normal" 2" kind.. So now you have a piece that roughly measures .75"x2". Stick it to the face of the Trackr Pixel so that the Trackr Pixel is covered and most of the tape is hanging off. Now make another one the same size as before and stick it to the other side of the Track Pixel but with the excess pointing the opposite of the first piece.

Now, simply pull, in a twisting motion, the two pieces in opposite directions making sure the piece of Duct Tape on the back is being pulled in the "open" direction and the Trackr Pixel will open.

No pressure (Squeezing) needed to open it.

Kinda looks like this with the tape on it:

Good Luck!

Totally stupid design. It's amazing that such a thing ever goes into production when it is so obviously flawed. How about a slot such that a coin can be used to open the frigging thing. To clever for its own good

Leather gloves can help too :D

Actually, using your palms, like the instructions say works like a charm. You don't need any pressure, For extra traction, I use a pair of medical gloves and it is a breeze. As far as putting the back on afterward, just make sure that the orientation is the same as it was when you removed it.

I had to hold the TrackR at the edge of a table with a pair of needle nose pliers and then use the rubber end of a hammer to push down and twist before it finally opened.

Thanks for the post! I'm going to send these posts to Trackr because they believe it isn't a problem to take off the back of the Pixel.

They are wrong, It is extremely difficult to open. It is even more difficult to get it closed correctly.

I had the same problem. I just couldn't get a good grip using my palms. I decided to take a 2 small pieces of electrical tape and i place one on each side of the trackr, Then I used the palm method in the video but you don't have to apply as much pressure. The electrical tape give you enough grip and it just twisted off. After leaving the battery out of the trackr for about 5 minutes and put the back on and the trackr was reset so that you could connect it to your phone. Good Luck

HI ... another person posted and said that they used duct tape instead of electrical tape. Well I tried my method again with the electrical tape and wan't able to budge it. I took a razor blade and CAREFULLY ran it around the top and I found out that there may have been a couple of areas where it may have been attached. I then tried the old palm scenario with the electrical tape and still would turn. I used the duct tape and it came right off. It was also helpful to get the cap screwed back on ....

Slight mod of tape method worked for me. I used Gorilla Tape with a strip about the width of the Pixel and the length was about 2". I used a Sharpie to mark the position of the back at the middle of the lanyard attachment. With the back facing up, I put the tape on the back angling off a bit to the left. I used the lanyard to pull right, and the excess length on the tape to pull left. That seemed to work the best for me replacing batteries in three of these. I used a multimeter to test battery voltage. No load, but it let me skip the ones that were already low in charge. Putting the back back on was simply aligning it to the point it came off, then pulling the tape tag right and the lanyard to the left. The process was straightforward once I had the hint about using tape.

Didn't work for me,

I had to drill two small indentations in the back case (be careful not to go through the plastic) and use a device for getting the backs off watches.

These indentations could be usefully added to the basic design

Stick the top to the desk with double sided tape.

Put another piece on the bottom to turn it.

Some gooey glue on my thumbs helped get the second one apart.

Didn't work for me either. I couldn't budge the back using any technique with my palms.

I used RegShoe's method (but without the watch tool) and got the back off. I used a dremel tool with a flat-tipped burr bit to grind two small divots on the back surface of the Pixel, being careful not to go through the plastic. I then used a pair of fine needle nose pliers, spreading the tips and putting one into each divot. I could then rotate the pliers in those divots to get the back to come off.

The easy way to open. Cut two pieces of duct tape the size of the trackr stick to the bottom and top. Now you can easily twist open with the palms of your hand.

This did not work for me either.

The duct tape worked great

I found it easier to use Scotch double sided cellophane tape. Sticks great to your fingers and to the Trackr device. LOTS more grip. Opened right up with reasonable effort and pressure.

I tried just about everything with these… I tried the palm trick, the hitchhiker’s thumb trick, the tape trick where you roll tape and make double sided sticky tape, the tape trick as Eric describes with twisting… the tape just kept falling off for me… heck I even tried using those sticky jar openers to get it… NONE OF THEM WORKED FOR ME! I was just about to give up, but I saw a comment about using leather gloves, so I figured I’d go dig some out of my garage. THEY WORKED!!! Here’s how:

Put leather gloves on (I used leather work gloves) and place the TrackR face down in your palm. With your first three fingers, create a triangle on the back of the TrackR. Press down so that leather on your fingertips is contacting the outer most surface of the backing. Twist towards the left (just slightly less than a quarter turn). The key here is letting the leather get enough grip on the plastic and to make sure you do not push in the center of the TrackR.

Once you figure it out, you will feel like a superhero. Good luck y’all!!

After calling customer service and trying their methods of using a rubber band to grip it or using double stick tape, which didn't work, I used rubber Playtex gloves. I held the front side of the Tracker in my palm and used two fingers with the other hand to twist the cover. It actually twisted easily, both to open and close.

This was an important design flaw, to make it so difficult to open! It causes so much frustration with all their customers, and even they couldn't offer a working solution. They shouldn't have to leave it to the ingenuity of their customers to figure out a way to open it!

Great idea about Playtex gloves. I used my dog's booties which are like thick rubber balloons. Anything with a high degree of tackiness cause pliers don't work. Agree it is a design flaw.

My preferred method was sitting the tracker pixel with the backside down onto something very grippy, like the underside of a deskpad that has that anti-slip rubber bottom surface, then rotate the top off with slight downward pressure.
