After trying all sorts of things suggested in Microsoft and HP troubleshooting steps, I came across an HP forum in which a problem of no sound after upgrading to Windows 8 or 10 from Windows 7 was presented. The cure was as follows and it worked for me tonight:

"If your notebook has 4 GB of memory, I know you are not going to believe this, but for some crazy reason having 4 GB of memory installed on that platform causes the sound not to work.

Try this workaround for that if your notebook has 4 GB of memory...

A problem with the Conexant audio means that you may hear no sound in Windows 10 even though everything appears to be working correctly.

Microsoft suggests running msconfig.exe and heading to the Boot tab. Click the Advanced options button, check the Maximum memory box and set the value to 3072."

If you don't know how to get to msconfig.exe, there are a variety of instructions on the internet. I just typed it into the Win10 search box. Not sure if Cortana lets you do that since I disabled mine. Make sure you reboot. You should hear the Windows theme play when you logon with your password. Tada!

I hope it works for you too.

In fact, you don't have to drop down to 3072 ... just set it to 4095 and it fixed the problem!

Hi thanks for your help. I ended up repairing it myself by going in to restore setting and reinstalling a driver I may have deleted by mistake.

You don't need to lose a whole GB of RAM.

You just have to give up one tiny little megabyte.

Works like a charm.

I did this(dropped usable to 3072) and now sound works for a day or two, and then it stops. A reboot fixes it but what a pain. Is there anything else that can be done.

From what I’ve seen, this is only a problem on the Intel models. I have two different 500 series G60’s with T4300’s that both exhibit the problem. My 100 series AMD G60 can go to 4GB RAM and sound works fine without any workaround, leaving me 3.75GB of usable memory after video allocation.

Try doing what Jim Van Meggelen says, dropping it down to 4095 or anything less than the full 4096. That has worked for me too. Better to have more usable RAM. And quite often, Windows updates screw it up again. So write yourself a note on how to change the usable RAM again. I've had to do this several times over the years. Windows PITA! ?
