Add a Second Drive to an 21.5" iMac (2017)

Is it possible to add a second drive (HDD or SSD) to an SSD equipped (only) system? Would any parts be necessary or does the iMac already include them inside?

From what I've seen in the Apple Store this model supports a Fusion Drive so it has to suport 2 drives, blade ssd and sata drive.

If is a ssd only model the SATA cable would be missing but the motherboard should have still the sata connector

Correct! The PCIe SSD model will not have the needed SATA - Power cable and you would need the rubber boots the 2.5" drive is held in by.

Be warned this is not an easy system to get into if you haven't opened one up before and you'll need to pull the logic board out to gain access to the headers.

If you got a Fusion drive model you will have all of the needed parts installed which makes the drive swap out easier.

Can we confirm that the SATA connector is not missing from board if the system is originally ordered with just an SSD blade? Also, I don't see the rubber boot on iFixit's list of parts. Any idea how available the part would be? Thanks guys.

As this is such a new system we just don't know yet if Apple has altered what they have done in the past. In all the previous models the SATA & power headers have been present on the logic board.

Apple has only waffled with the SSD PCIe slot and it's supporting logic. Some models are missing the parts (as in this case) and others had the parts. And this was only an issue on the given system which did or did not come with the PCIe SSD.

This is the parts kit you'll need: 21.5" iMac HDD KIT - Apple P/N 076-1448
