There are a few ways to check the network connection on a PC.

1. Open network and sharing center by right clicking on the network icon on the task bar next to time and date. Check to see if the computer is connected to the internet, you can run the troubleshooter which can fix some problems.

2. Ping the local network adapter by going to command prompt and enter "Ping 127.0.0.1, you should get a response even if not connected to internet, this shows the network adapter is functioning correctly

Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

If you get a time out then the problem is the network adapter.

3. Ping a company like Google, enter on command prompt "ping google.com" and you should get similar responses as in step 2, if you get a time out try next step

4. Enter on command prompt "TRACERT google.com" this takes a while but you can watch the route taken by the command as it goes from server to server until it reaches the target. If it times out, the last connection is good but the next hop timed out. Good command to see if you are getting through the ISP.

5. If you have trouble with steps 2 through 4, check the network adapter where the Ethernet cable connects, most times there are little activity lights that show that you are connected.

Other things that can cause problems with connecting are bad Ethernet cable, bad port on modem, corrupted driver for network adapter, defective key on keyboard and other items specific to your system.
