Tablet Only charges when active

I've had this tablet for over a year now, and never had an issue. Till one day I let the charge run below 5%, went to charge it, and it would register that I started to charge but when the screen turn off it stop charging battery ended up empty, then to charge it from there I had to force it into recovery mode, needless to say it worked to get it alive, but it only charged while awake even after that. I have no idea what could have cause this, and I am not sure where to begin in software or hardware. The chargers all work, and since it get power no problems when its on the port is working... just not sure about anything else.
