Hi Sharon, here are a few things you should check:

  • Are you using a genuine Apple 30-pin cable and charging block? If not, then you may have a poor quality cable or brick.
  • Your battery may be dead. The iPad 2 is fairly old and if it was used regularly, the battery may just be finished. The logical thing to try is to replace the battery but doing so on iPads is a bit more difficult than on a phone.
  • If a new battery doesn't solve your problem, then you may have a defective charging circuit on the logic board. This can be caused by non-genuine charging blocks or falls/impacts on the tablet.

You can check out the iFixit guide on replacing the battery. There are a lot of potential traps when removing the digitizer, handling the LCD and replacing the battery but it is certainly doable if you are used to fixing stuff.

You should download CoconutBattery (for Mac) or 3uTools for Windows. They have the ability to test your battery. If you have less than 80% of the original design capacity, you should consider changing the battery. If you have less than 60%, then you HAVE to change the battery.

On my ipad2 it started not charging most likely for

A bump it received that damaged the volume control. However I have found that letting the iPad battery completely drain does something. I plug it in and the next day it is 100%.
