HDD to SSD upgrade

Hello

I have a Mid 2012 13" MacBook Pro (non retina) i7/8GB RAM /750 GB 5400 HDD.

I need to upgrade it with an SSD to speed it up. I have couple of questions before doing it by my self.

  1. I've read couple of articles about SSD, What is the best SSD (256 or 512GB) for this model? (samsung/crucial/OCZ/OWC or ... (not too expensive)
  2. What is the requirements?
  3. In some sources I read about Trim and firmware update. I need more info about these.
  4. if I want to use my original HDD as external drive, how to remove the existing operating system without loosing my data?

I have upgraded recently the HDD in my 13" MacBook Pro mid 2012 to an SSD, so can post first hand information... :)

1. Best... well matter of taste really, while some reported issues, but those were mostly with older models (pre 2012). I went for a Kingston SSD (which I had already). Probably I would purchase a Samsung EVO if I needed a new one.

2. Any standard SSD will fit nicely, the laptop HDD is 9.5 mm, so that is the maximum thickness.

3. I have the latest El Sierra, and TRIM can be enabled form the command line (for 3rd party SSDs). From a Terminal windows execute "sudo trimforce enable".

4. So you want to retain the data on the HDD, but remove OSX (Mac OS) from it. I personally kept the OS on the HDD as a bootable backup, so can not comment on this one.

Good luck, my MacBook Pro reborn and feels like a brand new laptop. :)

Before you go down this path how much stuff do you have on your HD now? That will have a big bearing on what size of SSD you'll need to get. Unlike HD's SSD need free space to prevent wearing. If you get too small a SSD you run the risk of the drive failing prematurely. I recommend having 1/3 of the drive free on the smaller SSD's (256 GB or smaller) and 1/4 free on drives larger than 512 GB. You may want to make the jump to a 1TB drive to be safe.

  1. As to who's SSD in your case there is no real issues as you have a 6.0 Gb/s SATA based system. On the most part the only real difference between the different units is the speed of the read & write speed unless you are coding or doing renderings the speed difference won't make much difference.
  2. The only requirements is getting a unit that fits ;-} A standard 2.5" 9 mm drive is all you need.
  3. 3rd party SSD's have a couple of ways to do garbage collection internally within the drive. One of the issues is how the OS & drive knows what happening with a given piece of data that is no longer needed. TRIM services help make this faster. You'll likely need to enable it which is quite easy. As to updates, depending on your OS you are currently running now you may only need to make sure you are running the latest.
  4. To setup your new SSD you'll need an adapter like this: Starch 2.5" SATA to USB adapter In addition you'll need to download from the Apps Store a copy of the OS installer.

This series has a known issue with its HD SATA cable, it would be wise to replace it when you replace the HD. Here is the IFIXIT guide you'll need to follow: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012 Hard Drive Cable Replacement.

If you are having problems now you may want to visit an Apple Store or Apple authorized service center to have them replace it for free! Apple has been quietly replacing them.

Thanks for your information

Actually I have external drive and my data is in it, so my internal hard drive is empty most of the time and I keep most useful ones in my hard! So 256 or 512 is enough for me ☺️

Because I Use photoshop and lightroom and some time autodesk autocad I need a faster ssd (faster write speed I think)

Which one you prefer?

In that case I would recommend you boost your system to 16 GB of RAM.

We use Samsung EVO SSD's. 512 GB is the smallest we use.
